Pedroncelli Petite Sirah Dry Creek Valley 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Winemaking Harvested the first week of September, the grapes were brought in at full maturity during an early harvest. The fruit was crushed into stainless steel tanks where frequent pumping-over of the juice during fermentation allowed the young wine a substantial increase in flavor. The color extracted from the skins turns the wine a very deep purple color. The wine was aged for thirteen months in French and American oak barrels.

Since 1927, when John Pedroncelli, Sr. purchased vineyard and a small winery in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley, two elements remain unchanged: the exceptional place the Pedroncelli family farms vineyards, and the family's dedication to making fine wines. John Pedroncelli began his winemaking career as a child working side by side with his father, John Sr. learning from the ground up. After World War II and his service in the US Coast Guard, he graduated from Santa Rosa Junior College and then attended many winemaking classes at University of California at Davis. John’s style is Pedroncelli’s style—wines that are flavorful and balanced to reflect the region’s characteristics—he allows the wines to speak for themselves. As a family winery who has farmed for 80 years in the Dry Creek Valley, we want the next generations to be able to continue farming in an environmentally sensitive way. The most important statement we can make about our wine is that we are here for the long term and protecting the environment is one way we will achieve that goal. At Pedroncelli Winery, we practice sustainable winegrowing and, over the years, we have been reducing water use, building healthy soil, and protecting the vineyard environment. This is a comprehensive approach to vineyard management that involves all aspects of farming including human resources, viticulture, soil management, water management, pest management, habitat management, and wine quality. Four glasses

Tasting Notes:

“Opaque purple in the glass. Rich with ripe blackberry, black pepper and chocolate flavors. Very deep and complex, this wine should be opened and decanted if enjoyed before 2010. Expect this wine to take on complexities for the next 8-12 years. This wine will age well for at least 15 years--it has the structure to evolve nicely.”
