Pedroncelli Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

After tasting the Pedroncelli Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 last week and being swept away by the wine's richness and complexity, the fact that this wine isn't double the price is utterly mind blowing. For $16.99, who would have thought that Sonoma Cabernet could match the quality of a first rate Napa Cab??? This is not your Fruit Bomb or Oak Monster style of California Cabernet, rather it displays beautiful harmony and integration of fruit, oak, tannins on a silky, seductive palate. This is solid Cabernet at its best and the type of Red Wine that will leave your taste buds longing for another glass, and another. If you are a California Cabernet drinker, this is a wine you have to take advantage of. If you love great Red Wine, but want to stay reasonable, you can't afford to miss this wine.As the name indicates, three vineyards provided fruit for this blend: Wolff Vineyard (hillside); two Pedroncelli blocks on Dry Creek Road: East Side Vineyards and West Side Vineyard. A blend also of three varietals including Cabernet, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Rich aromas of ripe raspberry and allspice highlight this full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is highlighted by bright acidity, in just the right amount to showcase the fruit. Red plum, toasted oak notes and black pepper combine to round out the flavors. Framed by firm tannins and a lasting finish.

Since 1927, when John Pedroncelli, Sr. purchased vineyard and a small winery in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley, two elements remain unchanged: the exceptional place the Pedroncelli family farms vineyards, and the family's dedication to making fine wines. John Pedroncelli began his winemaking career as a child working side by side with his father, John Sr. learning from the ground up. After World War II and his service in the US Coast Guard, he graduated from Santa Rosa Junior College and then attended many winemaking classes at University of California at Davis. John’s style is Pedroncelli’s style—wines that are flavorful and balanced to reflect the region’s characteristics—he allows the wines to speak for themselves. As a family winery who has farmed for 80 years in the Dry Creek Valley, we want the next generations to be able to continue farming in an environmentally sensitive way. The most important statement we can make about our wine is that we are here for the long term and protecting the environment is one way we will achieve that goal. At Pedroncelli Winery, we practice sustainable winegrowing and, over the years, we have been reducing water use, building healthy soil, and protecting the vineyard environment. This is a comprehensive approach to vineyard management that involves all aspects of farming including human resources, viticulture, soil management, water management, pest management, habitat management, and wine quality. Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

I've visited the winery several times and found the cabs to be OK. However, they make a 3 grape port that is very oaky that we all love. I don't know if it's available anywhere else. The rating is for the port.
