What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Winemakers Notes

When prepping the soil for planting, we discovered ancient scallop and nautilus fossils revealing our hill top's residence on the deep ocean floor prior to the formation of the coastal range. The 2006 Scallop Shelf Estate Pinot noir is a blend of 6 clones: Pommard, 777, 115, Swan, Mt. Eden and 828. It was fermented in small, open-top fermenters, moved by gravity, aged for 11 months in 39% new French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Reviews

High-toned raspberry and cherry fruit aromas and flavors. Intriguing notes of orange peel and fine-grained tannins. Very smooth. Lighter in the mid-palate than the Pomarium.

Outstanding Pinot Noir ... light and delicate as Pinot should be in my opinion. Very good fruit and acidity. Will pair nicely with many dishes.
