Pazo San Mauro Albarino Rias Baixas 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

This is a monovarietal wine resulting from a meticulous selection of the best grapes on the property. The vineyards are pesticide- and herbicide-free with a vine age between 12 and 40 years. The site on the rolling banks of the river Miño is a natural amphitheater that is bathed in extraordinary sunlight during the midday hours. The vines are grown on trellises so that the fruit, in very restricted production, grow in optimum conditions to reach their peak quality. The vineyards enjoy an exceptional mesoclimate in the southernmost and sunniest area of DO Rias Baixas, which promotes early ripening of grapes with complex structure that retain their maximum acidity.

The winery Pazo San Mauro, located in the Denominación de Origen Rias Baixas, was acquired in 2003 by the Grupo Vinícola Marqués de Vargas. Since then, the new owners have invested heavily in both the restoration of its magnificent buildings and the construction of a new wine cellar, with the most advanced technologies for the finest production of wine. In this winery two white wines from the albariño grape are produced and all grapes are grown on the estate owned vineyards. Located in the northwestern corner of Spain, the Denomination of Origin “Rias Baixas” is made up of 5 very different geographical sub-zones. Although each of the sub-zones has its own peculiarities, they all have important factors in common, such as variety and similarity of soils. The Albariño is the axis of all its wines and is capable of producing the best Spanish whites, both young and fruity wines with an enviable acidity, and refined and complex wines aged in bottle. Other white varieties, such as Treixadura, Loureiro and Torrontés are also included in the elaboration of non-varietal wines. The Atlantic climate is characterized by mild temperatures and abundant rainfalls, yet enjoys hours of sunlight necessary for the maturing of the grapes. Read less

Tasting Notes:

This has the flavors people think about when they order Albariño: peach meats, yellow apple meats, dried pineapple, along with a tangy citrus-evoking finish. Utterly refreshing but intensely flavorful as well.
