What to Expect

Syrah: One of the few grapes to really be a global success. Syrah combines a meaty core of ripe berry fruit with tones that range from herbal to peppery in a package that tends to be medium bodied with good acidity and softer tannins. With age the wines can gain lovely leathery and black olive notes that make them a great match for savory and gamy dishes.

Tasting Note:
Deep dark brooding aromas of blue fruits, smoke, brown spices, wet stones and purple flowers, in the mouth...it tastes like... well...Walker Vine Hill Syrah. Concentrated and velvety, the tannin structure reminds me more of the 2004 than the 2003, with riper, finer tannins. The finish adds melted chocolate, graphite, black-currants, blueberry compote and leather to this luscious beauty.

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 132, May/June 2007 ($55) Opaque purple. Sexy blackberry, mulberry and candied licorice aromas, with a gentle graphite accent. Silky in texture, displaying a full array of sweet dark berry flavors and outstanding depth and focus. Very fine tannins add support to this extroverted bundle of fresh fruit, with tangier red berry notes coming on with air. The fruit carries impressively through the bright, seamless finish. This is the highest in alcohol of this year's releases at 14.8%.
