Pavie Macquin St. Emilion 2016

Winemaker's Notes:

*2016 Bordeaux Future*"The 2016 Pavie-Macquin is a blend of 82% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon matured in 50% new oak, picked from 7 October (with the young Merlot vines) until 22 October. The pH is 3.35 and it has 14.4% alcohol. I appreciate the intensity of this Pavie-Macquin. This is no shy retiring flower but comes out with cylinders pumping while maintaining the delineation, the detail that you look for. The palate is smooth and sensual on the entry, velvety in texture with plenty of luscious red berry fruit, vanilla and a hint of blueberry. It glides across the palate, the new oak neatly integrated. This is easily my pick of Nicolas Thienpont's 2016s and one of the best Pavie-Macquins that I have tasted at this stage." -Neal Martin, Wine Advocate *(94-96 Points)** Expected Arrival: Autumn 2019*

Terroirs are the expression of a place, a witness to history. Infinitely rich and varied, their complexity is expressed through their biological, geological, topographical and climatic characteristics. Precious and fragile, they are the greatest thing that nature offers us and they cannot be imitated. Their quality is an irreplaceable ingredient in the production of great wines. To produce great wines in the image of a terroir: the idea is simple but the practice requires patience and humility. Pavie Macquin, this eponymous chateau, finds the key to its history in one man, Albert Macquin (1852-1911). It is to him that Saint Emilion owes the idea of grafting vines onto rootstocks, thereby saving the region from ruin by phylloxera. Henri Enjalbert wrote, “During more than thirty years, Albert Macquin was the master of the transformation of the vineyards of Saint Emilion”. The current owners of the chateau are his grandchildren: Benoit and Bruno Corre, Marie-Jacques Charpentier and their children. They have shown, like their ancestor, a great attachment to this admirable terroir. Read less

Elegant, bright merlot dominated body with undertones of cabernet franc in the background. Notes of coffee, tobacco, and oak showing, but this has plenty of ripe and tasteful fruit to make for a complex and vivid experience. Well done. 85% Merlot, 14% Cab Franc, 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. 92 points.

WLTV North Jersey Off-Line at Basilicos: Aerated the heck out of this. The fruit really never made its way out, but I did finally get some smoke on the nose. The taste was very closed, but there was some great structure there with the oak and small hints of other flavors. I can't score this now, but I know this is going to be really yummy in about 10-15 years. [NR]

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the Pavie-Macquin has a very sensual bouquet, very pure with raspberry, wild strawberry and red cherries. Quite expressive, offering bright blueberry and raspberry aromas and flavors, with lots of lightly toasted spice flittering through the long, silky finish. Showing lovely purity, this is a really beautiful, tender expression for the vintage.-J.M. Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2011 Pavie-Macquin 6000ml

2010: Although not as potent alcoholically as its 2009 counterpart (14.5% in 2010 versus 15% in 2009), the 2010 is still a very big wine. [Barrel sample] A perfumed wine, all freshness and sweetness, enticing. The tannins offer the structure, but the fruit wraps around, giving final blackcurrant sorbet flavors.
