The bottle I had had some decay in the cork, but no damage to the wine. It was a bit thin at first, but refreshingly tart (went well with grilled flank steak), and it opened to a landscape-scale expanse after about 40 minutes of decanting. It may not be possible to purchase this wine any more, but if you can get your hands on a glass, it's worth it.

This is a powerful wine which exhibits a change in style towards elegance in recent years. The palate has delicious Merlot fruitiness along with black-currant acidity and a dense structure. Fine minerality at the end with juicy acidity. Wine Enthusiast.

70% merlot 20% cabernet franc and 10% cabernet sauvignon. 14.3% potential alcohol. Planted on 37 hectares of limestone mixed clay and limestone and alluvial sand soils. Vines are harvested by hand and yield 30 hl/ha. Aged in 80% new oak. Dark as night this St. Emilion is one of 2011 s top wines. Rich chalky aromas mix with violet plum and other red and black fruit on the nose. Full of power and grip on entry this has fine-grained tannins and high acidity levels with a fruity mid-palate and a long rich and firm finish. This will require 10 years in the cellar and should be enjoyed for two to three decades. Wow! From the Gerard Perse portfolio. Tasted three times. Enjoy 2024-2044+. Jeff Loo.

70% merlot 20% cabernet franc 10% cabernet sauvignon. Aged in 80% new French oak and 20% one-year-old barrels. Produced from a 37 Hectare mid-hillside vineyard from vines that average 45 years of age. The nose is reminiscent of a fresh raspberry pie also revealing chocolate coffee and mineral notes. Seamless structure and well-defined minerality are the hallmarks of this wine and this vintage stays true to form. Full bodied and concentrated supple tannins lead to a tremendous silky texture. Give this a few years to come together fully and begin drinking around 2018. John Sweeney.

This is really gorgeous with a flamboyant display of spice warm linzer torte blueberry and plum confiture aromas giving way to fleshy dark fruit and anise notes. Never overly weighty with great cut and purity on the finish thanks to a superstrong graphite note. Shows power precision and drive. Wine Spectator.

Saturated deep ruby-red. High-toned superripe aromas of black raspberry cassis and caramel. Then dense velvety and huge in the mouth with great power and chew to the thick flavors of cassis raspberry and crushed chalk. This improbably thick wine boasts terrific sweetness but its huge building tannins will need a good decade of cellaring to harmonize. Interestingly Gerard Perse picked this fruit in mid-October yet the wine has been even higher in alcohol in some recent vintages. 9

It displays enormous creme de cassis and boysenberry fruit with some cherries, spice box, and crushed rock in the background. It is intense, with loads of minerality, huge extraction, massive power, yet again, the vintage character seems to have given it a freshness and vibrancy despite the wine's obvious viscosity. The minimum patience required is at least a decade, as this is another 40-year wine from Gerard Perse. (Tasted five times.)

Winemaker's Notes:

"The full-bodied, opaque purple-hued 2012 exhibits a beautiful nose of mulberries, black cherries, cedar wood, high quality toasty oak, lead pencil shavings, crushed chalk and floral notes. This complex, authoritative, full-throttle Pavie possesses much more accessibility and precociousness than most vintages. It is another brilliant effort from proprietors Chantal and Gerard Perse. It should be drinkable in 8-10 years and last for three decades...94-96+" WA 4/13 "Lots of beautiful aromas of roses, dark fruits and dark chocolate. Full and chewy with beautiful firm tannins and that add to the long finish. Very intense. Very fine tannins. Very, very long. 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon...94-95" WS 4/13
