Paul Jaboulet 'Parallele 45' Cotes du Rhone Rose 2018

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Powdery smelling with notes of talc accenting the leafy apple peel and light red berry fruit of the nose. Bright and fresh on entry, this is fruity in a lovely way, delivering fresh raspberry and cherry flavors sprinkled with a little lime to the palate. The texture is just a touch supple, just a touch grippy. Very middle of the road but satisfying, with a fruity wild strawberry finish that shows good fruit persistence and a bit of RS. Nice and sure to be a crowd-pleaser. 87pts

The company’s hundred or so hectares of vineyards are tended with the greatest possible care. In the northern estates of the Côtes du Rhône, the wide diversity of terroirs and the influence of micro-climates favours the production of Syrah. This is the principle variety, and the sole red grape, grown by Paul Jaboulet Aîné, while Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier are used for the white wines. This provides the wines of each appellation with a well-defined personality. Paul Jaboulet Aîné favours traditional vineyard husbandry. Yields are restricted to between 25 and 35 hectolitres per hectare from vines that are on average 40 years old, with the most illustrious being nearly 80 years old. Canopy management, crop thinning, pruning and harvesting are all carried out by hand. Ancestral methods such as the use of hand winches and stake training of vines are still used, all of which requires a skilled, experienced workforce. When they have reached optimal maturity, the grapes are hand-harvested into 20kg crates to keep them in as good condition as possible. The company is currently undergoing sustainable agriculture qualification, which restricts the use of herbicides in the soil, favours organic fertilisers to encourage the development of micro-organisms, and allows the vines to thrust their roots deep into the ground. The vines consequently benefit from the natural and varied nourishment of the soil. This background means that the Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné winemaking team must work tirelessly, using the ancestral methods of the past to move into the future. Read less

A bit shy on the nose with gentle cherry fruit and hints of lavender and apple blossom. Nicely balanced in the mouth with bright acids and a touch of weight, lending this a rather robust mouthfeel. The fruit is simple but fresh, a nice blend of melon and light raspberry fruit that has little follow through, though there is a touch of spice on the finale. A perfectly friendly rose that shouldn’t be overlooked at the price. 84pts

Rather tight on the nose with some dusty pollen notes and vague, meadow-like herb and grass tones, with hints of lanolin and coconut husk. On the palate this is quite well balanced, focused and tight with a fine acid spine and slow to emerge but layered flavors of flowers, sage, lemongrass and bitter apple fruit. The finish adds in some minerality and more herbal tones like green tea, unripe peach and a little anise seed on the finale. Good length, fine balance. I can see this improving in the bottle. 90pts

Tight on the nose and not showing much. Vigorous coaxing yields a touch of peppery, gamy fruit with a growing vein of violet. On entry, this shows a rich yet fairly elegant texture. Seamless with lovely ripe fruits, wild berries, earth and some old wood spice that is subtle and layered, leading to a nice blueberry note on the back end. The finish is fairly long and again shows some old wood layered with fine wild blueberry fruit tones and some gentle, nutty and juniper-driven spice notes. The finish begins to show fine complexity with air: sour plums, smoke and cutting acids, all revealing themselves one at a time. A bit more open knit than I would like given the relatively reticent aromatics, but this is showing fine balance and detailed fresh fruit character. 90pts

The nose showed cherries in fresh turned soil, with notes of undergrowth, candle wax, minerals and floral stems. On the palate it was lean, showing tight blackberry fruit, herbs and hints of stone. The finish was long, with red fruits clinging on the mid-palate. This wine closed in on itself and took six hours, open in bottle, to really show its virtues.

Gentle at first with building intensity to the graphite, herbal and cedar tones on the nose. The slightly candied raspberry tones stay lurking but are obvious. Very structured in the mouth with good balance but very youthful tannins and strong acidity. Tight and somewhat unyielding though the fruit does pop on the long finish.88 for now but 94 plus potential 2012-2025

A really engaging nose that offers up an array of aromatics that include all the dusty, gravelly earth you could want with smoky herbal, herb de provence tones and nuanced black olive and eucalyptus. In the mouth this bottle is a touch lean and attenuated but still very much alive with a core of earth tinged black fruits. Not an entirely indicative bottle. 2008-1012 88pts

Delicious fresh-cut strawberries with even a bit of Cinnamon. Another rose, another amazing pairing for middle eastern food like lemon-mint Falafel.

A little more meaty than some other similar wines. Floral and perfumey.

Bright ripe cranberry flavors. A pleasantly acidic, refreshing wine with a bit of tannin holding up the wine a bit but they aren't overpowering. Should have with food.

A blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Cinsault and 10% Syrah, this racy rosé has some serious weight on the palate. Vinified as a “vin de saignée,” a short maceration with a long fermentation under controlled temperatures is employed. This wine defines the word delicious! Cotes du Rhone. - Winery

Dark purple. A heady, expansive bouquet evokes candied black and blue fruits, incense, violet and smoky minerals. Lush, palate-staining cassis and blueberry flavors show excellent clarity and vivacity for their power thanks to juicy acidity and a touch of peppery spices. Closes sweet, sappy, broad and extremely long, with smooth tannins coming on late.

Very focused, with good persistence and intensity to the core of melon, green almond, verbena, salted butter and chamomile notes, all wrapped around a solid core of Jonagold apple. The long, lightly toasted finish flows nicely. A touch shy on depth, but this has lovely minerality in reserve. Best from 2016 through 2022. 30 cases imported.

I reviewed the 2012 Hermitage Chevalier de Sterimberg last year, and it hasn’t budged an inch since that time. Possessing a Burgundian feel in its flinty minerality, white flowers, apple and brioche-scented bouquet, it’s medium to full-bodied, laser focused and has gained a subtle almond paste quality on the finish. Drink it over the coming decade or more.

The grand vin is the 2012 Hermitage la Chapelle, and it lives up to the billing in 2012. Coming mostly from the Meal and aged in just 20% new French oak, it’s a blockbuster that exhibits thrilling, mineral-drenched notes of spiced dark fruits, beef blood, black olive and toast. Full-bodied, deep, layered and incredibly concentrated, it has a stacked mid-palate and enough tannin to warrant another 4–5 years of bottle age. It will have 2–3 decades of overall prime drinking, and certainly evolve for longer.
