super average. good with spicy food. I paired it with turkey and chicken meatballs with a cayenne pepper rub. Definitely better with food than on its own as the earthiness plays a prominent role with almost no fruit to speak of.

Pop and pour. Tested at 72 deg F. Nose of compost, barnyard, hints of cola, sweet spice. Reserved yet intense neither sweet nor sour dusty dark fruit on the attack (blackberry, blueberry, dark plum) with notes of pepper and a bit of oak at the front of the mouth. Seems well-extracted and favors the heavier syrah. Somewhat thin mid-palate (I expect it to fill in some with air time). Short to medium finish of the dusty fruit and some mineral. Reasonably balanced and well-integrated. Dryish. Body medium plus, acid medium, tannin medium perhaps a touch higher. 14% abv. 60% grenache, 40% syrah.

This is a consistently good wine which opens after about 20 min. of aeration. Its best use is in cooking Boeuf Bourgignon or coq au vin. Make sure to open another bottle to drink with the meal. Buy a case.

A standard-bearer in the Rhône, Jaboulet's "Parallèle 45" bottling is silky-smooth with smoky berry flavors. A good choice for hearty lamb shanks or duck dishes like cassoulet.
