Paul Hobbs Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer las Piedras Vineyard St Helena 2014

External Review:

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is stunningly beautiful. Sweet red berries mint spices and rose petals are woven together in a wine of unusual finesse and pure silkiness. Today the aromas and flavors are naturally quite primary so readers will be well served giving the 2011 another few years in bottle. The 2011 isn t as big or voluptuous as the Paul Hobbs Cabernets can be but it is remarkably polished and sophisticated. 93+ Antonio Galloni.

Paul Hobbs Winery sprouted from the passion of one man: Paul Hobbs. Paul wasn’t satisfied just becoming Head Enologist of Robert Mondavi’s Opus One in 1981, or becoming Vice-President/Winemaker of Simi Winery in 1989. No, he wanted to create his very own grapes, on his own land. This passion led to the creation of Paul Hobbs Winery in 1991. Focused in the Russian River Valley, each harvest is meticulously captured so as to extract the very best from each grape. This passion started with only three wines in the winery’s repertoire: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but the winery quickly grew to produce over a dozen wines. Today, Paul Hobbs still consults other wineries around the globe, including wineries in Chile, Argentina, and Hungary. Read less

The single vineyard offerings include the elegant 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard an impressive wine exhibiting a dense ruby/purple color creamy richness lots of creme de cassis licorice and forest floor a complete palate from the attack to the finish with no holes vegetal characteristics or astringency. While less powerful than this cuvee can be in a great vintage it still delivers the goods. Drink it over the next decade. - Robert Parker Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Vintage: 2010 12/09/2013

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard is a big, rich wine. Interestingly, it is not as different from the 2009 as other wines in this tasting, which suggests the site itself has a very strong imprint. Minerals, dark fruit, licorice, tar and smoke are some of the notes that build towards the rich, expansive finish. This is a decidedly powerful style that works beautifully here. Anticipated maturity: 2015–2030.

From one of the great sites in Oakville, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard bristles on the palate with considerable energy and focus. Freshly cut flowers, red berries and crushed rocks all come to life in the glass. In 2010 Las Piedras stands out for its bright, intense salinity, which is the essential characteristic of this site. The 2010 needs at least a few years in bottle to settle down, but it is drop-dead gorgeous, even today. Anticipated maturity: 2020–2030.

Vintage: 2009 11/19/2013

Inky purple. High-pitched aromas of red- and blackcurrant, Indian spices and potpourri, with hint of vanilla lending depth. Bright and focused on the palate, offering intense dark berry and bitter cherry flavors that expand and gain sweetness with air. Soft tannins come on late and add shape to the very long, spicy, seamless finish.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard flows with the essence of mint, licorice, black cherries and flowers. It is a deep, muscular wine endowed with terrific richness and depth. Crushed rocks, graphite, minerals, smoke and tar are some of the many nuances that emerge on the dark, voluptuous finish. This seamless, pure wine is simply dazzling. The 2009 is the first Las Piedras from Paul Hobbs. Anticipated maturity: 2017–2029.
