What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

The 2005 Patz & Hall Chardonnay Durell Vineyard is an impressive vineyard site- stones and cobbles mixed with red soil, yielding small clusters from the already shy bearing Wente clone. The wine started to ferment indigenously (without cultured yeast) which brought about exotic aromas and a voluptuous mouth. The 2003 Durell has aromas of butter cookie and spiced apricot. The mouth is broad and round- with flavors of cantaloupe, toasted brioche and a hint of beeswax. The wine has a long creamy finish with lingering tastes of applesauce and vanill

Reviews

Rating: 90-92 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 132, May/June 2007 Deep yellow. Restrained aromas of citrus oil, minerals and smoke. Tightly wound and dry, with a strong crushed stone character and firm minerally acidity. A distinctly cooler style of chardonnay, very much in the style of the year, and structured to last in bottle. But will it match the fatter '04 for sheer personality?

"Fresh aromas of pineapple and flowers, with a smoky nuance. A step up in intensity and depth from the Napa Valley bottling, with good cut and a firm spine of acidity...91" IWC 5/07
