Patz and Hall Wine Company Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit buttery and floral on the nose with a top note of caramel, this seems a bit subdued with a powdered vanilla sugar quality on the nose along with subtle baked apple, cantaloupe melon and flint aromas. This very much weighted towards the back of the palate in though mouth, almost as if it’s crawling along my tongue. It’s round, and smooth but it lacks a center and while it delivers a nice blend of spice and apple fruit that lingers on the moderately long finish this is bit of a one trick pony. Still it offers plenty of weight and richness in the mouth. 88pts

Tight and focused on the nose with layers of mineral, floral, and slightly herb framed green apple and almost apricot tinged fruits that are nicely framed with a gentle touch of oak. A touch soft in the mouth with slightly exotic mango and musk melon flavors early on the palate. This has a fine underlying mineral note, that really drives the finish, but comes off as just a little loose on the palate. The oak is well judged but adds a bit of heaviness to the flavors here. Shows some textural appeal but also some heat on the finish. 88pts

Lightly spicy, chalky, with a touch of caramel and a floral note of balsam and perfume. On entry this is rich but with good, tense focus. There’s nicely integrated wood running through the core of this very ripe fruit, but it’s playing second fiddle. The finish is really succulent with deep, ripe fruit character that melds together orchard and citrus fruits on a long, slightly caramelly finish. A rich pure style perfect for a roast veal roast. 90pts.

Crystal clear subdued yellow color. A bit of a fruity/flowery nose. Lemon and tropical fruit flavors on introduction. Then I get caramel. Not anywhere near an oaky, California butter-bomb, but pretty far from a Burgundian example of this grape variety.

In addition to combining fruit from a whos who of the appellations most renowned vineyards, this wine reflects the exceptional quality of the 2013 vintage, which provided ideal weather for growing perfectly ripe Chardonnay that possesses beautiful brightness, acidity and sophisticated mineral notes. In both the aromas and on the palate, this is a vivid and energetic wine, with lovely layers of pear, apple, green summer melon, Muscat, lavender and toasted hazelnut. Seamlessly integrated French oak adds a hint of maple syrup that finds an intriguing counterpoint in the wines minerality, and in a salty sea spray note that lingers on the long, fresh finish. - WineryWinemaking:100% Chardonnay fruitWhole cluster pressed100% indigenous yeast fermentations (wild)Sur lie aged with weekly stirring100% malo-lactic fermentation in barrel35% new Burgundian French oak barrels

Aromas of peach and green apple. A round, rich, lightly saline midweight with pear, spice and wild herb flavors nicely framed by fresh acidity. Finishes with good length and minerality.

The 2010 Patz and Hall Sonoma Coast Chardonnay has impressive weight and minerality, something we love to see in domestic chardonnay. Great balance between apple/citrus character, creme brulee-like richness, and crisp acidity.
