Herby and leafy on the nose though with powerful base notes of dry soil, lightly toasted oak and meaty, spicy black fruit. Almost silken in the mouth, this is an iron fist in a velvet glove, though it is a dainty fist. This has wonderful depth and tension to it, very well balanced and wrapped with a deep yet fresh layer of cherry and ripe herb fruit. Everything is in balance and in proportion, at least if you don't mind a little extra dry extract in your Pinot. Still there is no heaviness here, just a hint of alcohol. This finishes with the same drive and purity it shows on the palate. This is delicious and refined. 92pts

Intense and clean on the nose with wonderful fresh mixed berry notes dusted with some middle eastern spices and topped with fine sage notes. Really deceptive in the mouth. This enters with almost no mass but it’s actually quire rich. The fruit is subdued but deep with layers of dark berry fruit, a hint of plum skin, and integrated oak notes driving toward the finish. This strikes me as just a bit young but it has an inner intensity that makes this already appealing. Great persistence to the black berry, black cherry fruit on the long finish where the tannins threaten to become obvious yet never rise above their fruit driven cover. 93pts

Somewhat flowery nose. Red fruit on entry—cherry, strawberry. While not “syrupy,” there is more fruitiness than I normally like. A pleasant wine. Fairly light-bodied, but not revelatory. Could use a bit of acid.

Not as light-colored as a lot of Pinots seem to be. Earthy nose, although there seems to be something “sweet” there, also—caramel, molasses. On introduction to the tongue, there is a pleasant (i.e., light) hit of red fruit—cherry or strawberry. Towards the back of the palate I’m getting that earthiness, again. Not really unpleasant. The light touch on the fruit and the neutralizing earthiness, is quite enjoyable. Noticeable tannin and acid.

Spicy nose of red raspberry. Seductive aromas also of black cherry and touches of mineral and cedar. Great structure, rich and dense. Builds from subtlety to richness and depth. Very flavorful and nice. 94 pts. 12/1/12

Intense, smooth, and rich. A very elegant dinner wine.

Nose is almost Burgundian, with red fruit, minerals and acidity bursting out. On the palate, this is too overripe and heavy. The tannins are also light, but it's somewhat saved by the zesty acidity that seems to dance on your tongue. $46

It had an interesting aftertaste. Maybe I didn't chill it long enough.

Medium red. Expressive aromas of cranberry, plum, brown spices and forest floor, along with a meaty nuance. Supple and bright, with dark plum and earth flavors lifted by aromatic spices. A very representative, ripe Sonoma Coast blend with good breadth and immediate appeal.

It’s hard to imagine any Pinot Noir being richer or riper than this one, which is made from a blend of vineyards from throughout the county’s cooler areas. It’s explosive with jammy raspberries, cherries, boysenberries and pomegranates, along with plenty of new French oak for buttery, toasty complexities. It will hold for a year or three.

Appealing, with early-drinking allure, offering fresh, snappy pomegranate, raspberry, subtle earth and cedar notes, ending with tannic grip. Drink now through 2020. 15,000 cases made.

Ripe and juicy, with red and black plum and black cherry flavors. The silky texture lets the flavors linger on the finish, ending with a touch of fresh earth and anise. Drink now through 2022.

The 2011 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is their largest cuvee of Pinot Noir (just over 7,000 cases). This wine, which was totally harvested before any rains, displays a dark ruby color and notes of forest floor intermixed with anise, Asian plum sauce, pomegranate and black cherries. It is ripe, deep, lovely and ideal for drinking over the next 3–4 years.

Even better than the previous vintage, which we thought was quite fine, Patz and Hall 2011 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is intensely aromatic, vivid, and pure.

In the bouquet, this cool-climate charm takes the form of bright, fresh and flirtatious cherry and strawberry flavors. These fetching aromas are echoed on the palate, where complex layers of mulled cherries, strawberries and raspberries intermingle with spicy cinnamon and clove elements.
