Patz & Hall Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard 2014

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Full and richly complex aromas of black cherry and chocolate, toast, oak and vanilla and a bit of tar. Flavors are smooth, with round tannins, cinnamon, baking spice and cedar box, leather, tobacco and beautiful black cherry.

Big spicy blackberry fruit greet the nose with lots of brambly and toasted spice base notes. Silky and yet thick not he palate and packed with wild cherry fruit. There's a fine base of silky tannins here supporting the rich fruit and a little wood spice adding an accent note on the long finish. A big Pinot, easy to like. 91pts

The kind of pinot that I like. Not “in your face” with fruit. There is, in fact red fruit, here, but it is a suggestion, only. That is a good thing. Another suggestion of spice—nutmeg? Some earthiness, and some sourness, Appropriately, for a Pinot Noir, not full-bodied, at all.

Clear, transparent cherry color. Delicate slight red berry aromas. Quite delicate on the tongue. Some hint of cherry fruit, but, make no mistake this is wine—not cough syrup. So, Meiomi lovers need not apply. Maybe some bitter chocolate, some tar. Good refreshing acid. Pretty sophisticated wine.

Wonderful spiced nose of cranberry, pomegranate and strawberry. Nice and pretty on the nose and on the palate. - Tasted at Patz & Hall with Heather Patz 4/23/10

I had this last night at a wine dinner and I enjoyed it. On the nose, it is starting to develop some tertiary aromas of tea leaves and earth. I enjoyed the nose with its slight funkiness more than the palate, although the palate was good. There were flavors of blackberries and earth with a slight alcoholic edge. I think this wine needs to be consumed, now.

I really liked this one. Poured directly after opening and had a great fruity smell. I tasted a little pepper and fruit. (maybe cherry?)

Good deep red. Dark aromas of blackberry, licorice and violet are perked up by notes of tangy pomegranate, orange zest and rose petal. Juicy, silky and penetrating, displaying superb purity and intensity to its youthful black fruit, forest floor and violet flavors. Tight, backward and very structured, with the concentration and balance for a graceful evolution in bottle. This Hyde-Calera clone gives very small clusters, noted winemaker James Hall, and the production in 2012 was a moderate three tons per acre.

Big and bold and absolutely brimming with ripe cherry-like fruit that is accompanied step for step by flamboyant oak this full-throated working goes for it all and hits the mark smartly in terms of fleshy richness and sheer generosity. It is not a wine we would choose as a foil to more delicate foods and it may be anathema to those who believe that balance is defined first and last by tooth-tingling acid but it will shine as a partner to flavorful meatier fare and it is built with an eye to at least a few years of aging. Made from a combination of Dijon clones and the renowned (and winemaker’s favorite) calera clonal material, the 2011 Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard offers up notes of roasted meats, bouquet garni, black currants and black cherries along with loads of steak tartare in a deep, rich, medium to full-bodied style. Sadly, only 629 cases were produced of this Pinot Noir that begs for consumption over the next 3–4 years.

Good medium red, not too bright. Deeply pitched aromas of plum, raspberry, strawberry, mocha, loam and brown spices, lifted by floral notes of lavender and rose petal. Rich, broad and concentrated; more about spices and flowers than primary fruit today but sophisticated and complex nonetheless. A faint mintiness provides lift. Spreads out nicely on the back half, finishing with a light dusting of tannins and plenty of energy. This one needs a few years in the cellar.
