Patz & Hall Pinot Noir Carneros Hyde Vineyard 2008
This vineyard often exhibits classic Carneros flavors of strawberries and raspberries mingled with mocha, espresso and cinnamon. Our HYDE VINEYARD - Carneros Pinot Noir consists of grapes from three small parcels of the vineyard planted to a veritable who’s who of the finest Pinot clones. Though this wine focuses on a core of Hyde-Calera grapes, it also includes Dijon 777, 667, 115, Swan, Pommard and Bebe clone fruit. As a result, it is at once delicate and fascinatingly intricate, while at the same time being dense, deeply colored and extracted.
Established in 1988, Patz & Hall embodies the shared vision and collective expertise of four talented friends - Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moses and Heather Patz. Together, this dedicated team of individuals has turned a desire to craft benchmark, single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs into one of California's most celebrated artisan wineries.
Editorial Reviews for Patz & Hall Pinot Noir Carneros Hyde Vineyard
Big spicy blackberry fruit greet the nose with lots of brambly and toasted spice base notes. Silky and yet thick not he palate and packed with wild cherry fruit. There's a fine base of silky tannins here supporting the rich fruit and a little wood spice adding an accent note on the long finish. A big Pinot, easy to like. 91pts

Generous plum, rose petal, wild berry and lavender aromas carry over to the palate in a rich, supple, elegant style. A nice touch of cedary vanilla oak adds a pleasant flavor dimension and the flavors linger on and on. Drink now through 2009.
Good deep red. Aromas of strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, nutmeg and earth, with hints of licorice and gingerbread. Rich, dense and strong, hinting at the energetic extraction and finishing with considerable grip. Patz & Hall told me they're getting pinot from a better site within Hyde Vineyard beginning with this 2003. "The old wine was more elegant and floral, but this is denser," noted Moses. Eighty percent of this wine comes from the shy-bearing Calera clone.
The well-made, tannic, dark plum-colored 2003 Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard exhibits strawberry, underbrush, forest floor, and sweet cherry characteristics. This chunky, muscular Pinot is not yet fully expressive. Give it another year of bottle age, and drink it over the following 5-7 years.
IWC 93pts, WS 92pts - Winemaker Notes - With compelling density, a broad, plush texture and fine-grained tannins that saturate the palate, this is a rich and supple Pinot Noir offering lovely purity of fruit. Precocious and accessible, it is revealing delicious layers of strawberry, pomegranate and red apple skin in its youth, alongside elements of blueberry, toffee and coffee. Classic Hyde, this is a true reflection of a warmer growing site and a world-class vineyard.
Good red-ruby. Black plum and black cherry on the nose. Bright, round and spicy in the mouth, with briary dark berry flavors complicated by licorice, dark chocolate, fresh herbs and brown spices. Offers good density and sweetness and an attractive sappy quality. Finishes with nicely integrated tannins, a rather plush texture and lingering suggestions of brown spices and underbrush.
Readers should not think the 2000 Pinot Noir Hyde Park Vineyard's light to medium ruby color means there us a shortage of flavor. On the contrary, it possesses abundant quantities of sweet black cherry fruit intermixed with dried herbs, earth, and smoke, along with a meaty element reminiscent of a Morey-St-Denis. This tasty, luscious, medium to full-bodied Pinot should be consumed over the next 4-5 years.
Bright, deep red. Bright aromas of raspberry, cherry, flowers and spices. Sweet, lush and flavorful; a red fruit bomb framed and enlivened by pepper and spice nuances, plus a whiff of flowers. At once dense and fruity. Should be a real crowd-pleaser. Very strong for an entry-level pinot.
