Patz & Hall Pinot Noir Carneros Hyde Vineyard 2001

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Good deep red. Aromas of strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, nutmeg and earth, with hints of licorice and gingerbread. Rich, dense and strong, hinting at the energetic extraction and finishing with considerable grip. Patz & Hall told me they're getting pinot from a better site within Hyde Vineyard beginning with this 2003. "The old wine was more elegant and floral, but this is denser," noted Moses. Eighty percent of this wine comes from the shy-bearing Calera clone.

Good red-ruby. Black plum and black cherry on the nose. Bright, round and spicy in the mouth, with briary dark berry flavors complicated by licorice, dark chocolate, fresh herbs and brown spices. Offers good density and sweetness and an attractive sappy quality. Finishes with nicely integrated tannins, a rather plush texture and lingering suggestions of brown spices and underbrush.

Firm and concentrated, with mineral, blueberry, raspberry and cedary oak flavors that are tightly focused, with anise, sage and berry fruit. Needs time to unwind. Best from 2007 through 2012.

Generous plum, rose petal, wild berry and lavender aromas carry over to the palate in a rich, supple, elegant style. A nice touch of cedary vanilla oak adds a pleasant flavor dimension and the flavors linger on and on. Drink now through 2009.

The well-made, tannic, dark plum-colored 2003 Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard exhibits strawberry, underbrush, forest floor, and sweet cherry characteristics. This chunky, muscular Pinot is not yet fully expressive. Give it another year of bottle age, and drink it over the following 5-7 years.

Readers should not think the 2000 Pinot Noir Hyde Park Vineyard's light to medium ruby color means there us a shortage of flavor. On the contrary, it possesses abundant quantities of sweet black cherry fruit intermixed with dried herbs, earth, and smoke, along with a meaty element reminiscent of a Morey-St-Denis. This tasty, luscious, medium to full-bodied Pinot should be consumed over the next 4-5 years.
