Patz & Hall Hudson Vineyard Chardonnay 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight and focused on the nose, this smells leesy with almond, floral and dried apple aromas over a base note of butcher’s wax, dried lemon peel and a hint of vanilla. Soft and rich on entry, this has honeycomb edges to the lush core of ripe apple and pineapple fruit. There’s a nice accent of wood spice adding additional complexity but the oak is very well managed. The acidity seems a bit low here, and while that certainly makes this smooth and easy to drink, it also makes it a bit loose and short with nothing to drive the creamy, almost butterscotch and toast driven flavors through the finish, though this does manage to stick to the palate a bit through sheer natural weight. 89ps

Creamy elegant palate and wonderful balance of fruit and oak. There's a nice spicy "zing" through the mid-palate on this wine. Really really nice. - Tasted at Patz & Hall with Heather Patz 4/23/10

Green-tinged yellow. Captivating, rather Burgundian aromas of lemon cream, flowers, minerals and iodine. Intensely flavored and firmly built, with brisk acidity framing the sappy flavors of lemon cream, underripe pineapple and green tropical fruits. Energetic, tactile wine with lovely lingering perfume and a light touch. This may well merit an even higher score with a couple years of additional time in bottle.

Combining fruit from a who's who of the appellation's most renowned vineyards, this cuvée includes Durell Vineyard's rich, viscous texture, the minerality and crisp acidity of grapes grown on the cold, windswept slopes of Gap's Crown Vineyard, Zio Tony Ranch's signature stone fruit flavors of peach and apricot, and the tropical fruit, Fuji apple and white flower aromatics from Dutton Ranch's heirloom clones. These elements are accented by additional layers of tangerine, Bosc pear, peach and hazelnut, resulting in a lithe, layered and complex wine that harmoniously combines the finest attributes of great Sonoma Coast winegrowing. - Winery

Floral and spicy aromas with rich, dense fruit flavors of red apples, mango with citrus, then nutmeg and allspice. It finishes long and creamy.
