What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

Produced from some of the oldest plantings of Chardonnay in western Sonoma, this wine is a blend of California heritage clones - Robert Young, Rued, Hyde-Wente and UC Davis Clone 4. Mostly dry farmed, the vines struggle to produce small but intensely concentrated berries, making for great depth of flavor and texture. The 2005 Dutton Ranch Russian River Chardonnay displays beautiful aromas of lemon curd and passion fruit with hints of buttered toast and honey, intermingled with a ribbon of caramel. Creamy and rich, with flavors of lemon meringue and pineapple, the finish shows great finesse read more...

Rating: 94-95 - As reviewed by Vinfolio in Issue 94 An excellent follow up to last year's mind-bending futures offering. I am always drawn to the luxurious ripeness of Dutton: seamless lemon, apple, pear and tropical notes abound in the nose already developing hints of the textbook toastiness that is fully integrated upon release. The flavors already show the lavish citrus, stone fruit ripeness tempered by firm acidity.

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar ReviewRated 92Pale medium yellow. Stony, floral nose hints at spices and tropical fruits. Quite perfumed and precise in the mouth, with a subtle saline character adding nuance to the bright flavors of lemon, pineapple and spices; showed a floral fragrance that reminded me of riesling, or muscat. The firm, harmonious acids really frame the wine and carry the fruit. Finishes bright, strong and long.Wine Tasting NotesThe Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Chardonnay displays beautiful aromas of lemon curd and passion fruit with hints of buttered read more...

Patz & Hall and their partners create impressive Burgundian styled Chards and Pinots that balance elegant acidity with sophisticated fruit. This 2006 Dutton Ranch Chardonnay lifts you with its aromas of lush tropical fruit, and complex range of beautiful smoky and citrus flavors. Compared to many other 'hard to find costly label' Chardonnays in this premium category, and at about $35.00 this wine is a find. What makes this wine so great is that it's fresh, distinct and truly expressive.
