Patz & Hall Burnside Vineyard Pinot Noir 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit toasty and middle eastern spicy on the nose with burnished cherry fruit and a savory edge. Very silky on the palate, compact with a little wood soiree over dark, balsamic toned cherry fruit that leads to a long, earthy finish. 91pts

Patz & Hall has earned a high reputation for their Chardonnays and Pinots over recent vintages. Alder Springs is a vineyard at 2,100 feet within 7 miles of the Pacific Ocean planted with a selection of Dijon clones (114 and 115 as well as 667 and 777). It was fermented with a combination of ambient and cultured yeasts and aged in 60% new Burgundian barrels. Highly rated and very limited.

A new offering from the Dijon clone of Pinot Noir known as #115, is the 2002 Pinot Noir Burnside Vineyard. It boasts excellent fruit, medium to full body, good texture, and loads of kirsch, pomegranate, and earthy/herbaceous characteristics, and an impressively long finish. This pure Pinot Noir should drink well for 3-4 years.
