Patrick Lesec 'Les Galets Blonds' Chateauneuf du Pape 2001

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Another terroir-driven offering is the 2001 Chacirc;teauneuf du Pape Kristial from a vineyard in the northeastern sector of the appellation called Cristia. Made from 100% destemmed grapes, primarily Grenache with a touch of Mourvegrave;dre, it possesses a deep ruby/purple color, a boatload of tannin, medium to full body, racy, complex, stylish aromas and flavors, and a long, heady finish. There is plenty of structure, and one can sense the Mourvegrave;dre component. Aged in 100% used barrels, this rich, heady Chateauneuf represents a synthesis of a grand cru Burgundy and southern Rhone given its floral elegance yet substantial power and intensity. Give this beauty 1ndash;2 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 10ndash;12.

The third cuveacute;e of Chateauneuf du Pape is Kristial. All of this offering emerges from the northeastern lieux-dit called Cristia, hence the name. The 2001 is a wine of phenomenal intensity, purity, and precision. It reveals better acidity, depth, and volume than its older sibling, but has lost none of this cuveersquo;s hallmark elegance and feminine qualities. A majestic wine, it is a Chateauneuf du Pape for Burgundy grand cru aficionados. Anticipated maturity: 2007ndash;2020.

Patrick Lesec offers a wide range of French wines with many selections from the Rhone. He partners with individual domains that meet his strict criteria. In fact, even those wines under his own label are sourced and bottled on the estates. He favors minimal manipulation and low sulfer treatments, and prefers not to fine or filter whenever possible. "Galets Blonds" is composed of nearly all Grenache with a small amount of Syrah and is aged in tanks and large casks. The 2001 has recieved a rating in the 90's from America's favorite critic.
