Aromas of new and old saddle leather, aged beef, and a touch of brett jump from the glass of the meaty, horsy 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Chasse-Temps. A blend of both foudre and tank-aged Grenache (70%) and Mourvedre (the latter component may account for this winersquo;s animalistic style), this rich, full-bodied, kinky Chateauneuf may be controversial, but I enjoyed it. It should drink well for 10ndash;12 years. The sources for this cuvee include the Palestor and Cabrieres vineyards.

The outstanding 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Chasse-Temps is a blend of tank-aged Grenache (70%) and Mourvedre (30%). This wine is less animal than it was last year, revealing plenty of sweet kirsch liqueur, raspberry, licorice, smoke, herb, and roasted meat notes. Dense, full-bodied, moderately tannic, and in need of 2ndash;3 years of bottle age, it is a real vin de garde and should keep 10ndash;15 years.
