Dark red. Intense, focused aromas of red berries, plum, kirsch and exotic spices. Energetic and juicy, with powerful and well-delineated flavors of strawberry preserves, sweet cherry and fresh herbs. Expands and deepens with aeration, finishing with superb thrust to its sweet red fruit flavors. Gentle tannins provide support. This was raised completely in older hogsheads and is a pure, vibrant, unadorned example of shiraz, with striking sweetness and excellent balance.

The story begins in 1973 when Graeme Leith and Sue Mackinnon great friends and partners decided that they wanted even more challenges in life than were possible for them in their careers as electrical contractor and journalist; Graeme was the electrical contractor. They wanted to brave the elements, face the challenges of the land, and like so many before them pursue the holy grail of ‘the best wine in the world’. They didn’t want it to be dependent on pesticides or insecticides so they chose a site in a dry area north west of Bendigo on old gold diggings, where the soil had been dug over a hundred and twenty years before by goldminers. There they planted their vines, initially shiraz and cabernet sauvignon to make a classic Aussie blend. They were successful, and the first wine they showed at the Melbourne Wine Show, the 1982 shiraz cabernet won gold. Since then the vineyards produce has won numerous medals for magnificent wines, presently including not only the predominant Graeme’s Blend shiraz cabernet, but The Angel, a cabernet sauvignon merlot cab franc, some spectacular shirazes, and over the last few years the pinot noir made from Coldstream grapes. White wines are made too, but Passing Clouds is famous for its reds, reds of great character, individuality and superb quality. The finest wine I have yet tasted from Passing Clouds (trust me, this is not some sort of scatological humor), the 2002 Shiraz Reserve boasts a deep purple color as well as an explosive bouquet of blackberries and smoke. This plump, fleshy, rich, full-bodied red spent nearly a year in American oak hogsheads, of which a small percentage were new. Pure and beautifully layered, it is ideal for drinking over the next decade.

Central Victorian reds tend toward crisp textures, but seldom get the ripe flavors evident in this bottling from one of the true stars among the Shiraz producers of the region. Crisp and vibrant, the wine has real stature. It's jazzy with bright blackberry and pepper flavors that echo appealingly on the fine-grained finish. Drink now through 2008.

A bold, fruit-driven style of Shiraz, but one that doesn't sacrifice complexity, as it retains hints of earth and spice that give its brambly blackberry flavors even greater appeal. At over 15% alcohol, it's a big wine, but there's no detectable heat, and the coffee-tinged finish is long and dusty. Drink now-2015.

Medium ruby. Explosive red berry-scented nose shows an amazing array of floral notes, especially white rose and magnolia. Silky-smooth on the palate, with spicy raspberry and red currant flavors and a touch of cinnamon toast. Finishes supple and elegant, without any rough edges or herbal qualities. Very sexy stuff.
