Paracombe Shiraz Adelaide Hills Somerville 2004

External Review:

The limited selection luxury cuvée (less than 100 cases), the 2001 Shiraz Somerville, is fabulous. An inky/ruby/purple color is accompanied by sumptuous aromas of blackberry liqueur, sweet espresso roast, white chocolate, melted licorice, and a subtle notion of oak. This unctuously textured, thick, rich, extraordinarily pure, elegant Shiraz will drink well for 10-15 years.

The Paracombe vineyard and winery is located high on a plateau at Paracombe in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia. Paul and Kathy Drogemuller established Paracombe Wines in 1983 following the Ash Wednesday bushfires. The property, a former dairy farm was totally ravaged by the bushfire, despite the devastation, Paul and Kathy could see great potential as a vineyard site and commenced plantings which has grown to close to 16 hectares today. Together with hard work and vision they designed and built a fully operational winery with facility to crush around 1000 tonnes of fruit. The Drogemuller’s Paracombe vineyard lies 425 metres above sea level. Soil is lean with ironstone, buckshot gravel and quartz, an interesting remnant from an ancient riverbed. These characters along with minimal irrigation contribute a strong influence in wine style and flavour. The vineyard has an easterly aspect making the most of the morning sun. Grapes ripen slowly and gently during the warm, sunny days and cool nights of late summer, early autumn. Paracombe winter is cold and wet. Warm, dry clothing is a must for pruning, which is all done by hand. Bud thinning in early Spring creates optimum bunch position and low yields. Vine canopies are lifted to vertical shoot position promoting air flow letting sunlight in to the fruit zone reducing disease pressures and granting ripe flavours. At vintage Paul and Kathy walk through the vineyard tasting grapes and looking for the right flavours before harvest. Grapes are selectively harvested to gain the best flavour and quality possible. Some fruit is sourced from a small selection of specialist growers with similar soil types and carefully managed vineyards. Paracombe Wines is an award winning, family operation gaining recognition within Australia and Internationally, producing a distinctive range of wines displaying finesse and varietal intensity. Simply, Paul and Kathy are completely passionate about what they do. Enjoy the fruits of their efforts. Read less

A Shiraz with a Type A personality; Big and brash on the nose, with enthusiastic, forward flavors on the palate. Up front, it smells like marzipan, toast, raspberry and blackberry, and similar notes ring true in the mouth, Finishes pretty long, with a biscuit or cracker-like flavor. Very tasty.

The blockbuster 2000 Shiraz Somerville (only 1,200 bottles produced) was aged in French oak. A candidate for "wine of the vintage" in this section of Australia, it reveals an opaque purple color along with gorgeous aromas of melted chocolate intermixed with espresso roast, blackberries, cherries, and currants. It possesses considerable power (15.8% alcohol), a voluptuous, opulent personality, full body, low acidity, and well-integrated tannin. This knock-out Shiraz will provide immense enjoyment over the next 10-12+ years. Drink 2003-2015.

Opaque inky ruby. Superripe, assertive aromas of kirsch, dark plum, fig cake and coffee, with exotic hints of sandalwood, clove and cinnamon. An outsized and densely textured shiraz whose 16.2% alcohol gives a glyceral, unctuous texture to the sweet, concentrated flavors of blackberry, cassis and chocolate. There's considerable power and a brooding quality to the finish, which features powerful tannins and a roasted plum quality.
