Paolo Scavino 'Bricco Ambrogio' Barolo 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

The high toned nose shows toasty spice but more floral edged raspberry and strawberry fruit, macerated Frutti del Bosco and rose petals. This is showing very well, silky with soft rich tannins and very expressive fruit, very aromatic in the mouth, and showing some nice soil tones. The fruit here lacks some brightness, but shows assertive fruitiness in a rather soft style. 88pts

After a few minutes of opening the Ambrogio develops & soften. Plenty of fruit with some spice. Violet flavours are persistent & continue on the mid palate. The length is medium. QC (http://www.questionofwine.blogspot.com)

Good dark, bright red. Red berries and tobacco on the vinous but reticent nose and palate. Silky and plush, with complex saline quality giving this a savory rather than sweet impression. Not showing quite the lift today of the Carobric but this will need time to express itself. Today the tannins are a bit dusty. This wine comprises a blend of Monvigliero and La Morra fruit. Scavino purchased the latter vines in 2001, noting that the previous owner used too much chemical fertilizer. The wine, he added, has shown considerable improvement in the last three or four years.

The 2010 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio bursts open with an immediate whiff of fresh flowers and crushed roses. Paolo Scavino bought the four-hectare, south-facing vineyard in 2001 the same moment he saw the listing. Crushed mineral tones appear at the back but those delicate fruit and floral tones take center stage. The wine is smooth and silky, although the tannic presence and acidity are very much in play. Drink: 2017–2030.

Juicy and packed with cherry, black currant, violet, licorice and spice flavors, riding a wave of vibrant acidity. Tannins lend support, allowing this to cruise to a long aftertaste, courtesy of the driving acidity. Best from 2018 through 2032.

WA: 92Pts-Rich and ripe fruit with lots of plum, nectarine and rose bush aromas. Full-bodied with velvety tannins. Long and fruity finish.
