Paolo Scavino Barolo Riserva Rocche Dell'Annunziata 2009
Big fruit on the nose that shows lots of dried fruit character along with savory, sweet root beer notes, a bit gummi bear like with some heat, and camphor and menthol top notes. This is very rich on entry with lots of red fruit that shows a bit matte in the mouth. There’s a fair amount of tannin right up front along with bright, candied dark cherry/black cherry fruit with a touch of coffee on the longish finish. Not terribly 2007 in fact, if one ignores the alcohol. The finish shows some really lovely red fruit and rose floral notes, with the wood being fairly well integrated. 91ptsAdd winemaker's notes

Perfumey oak dominates the nose; this is packed with vanilla, sweet toasty wood spice and shows just a hint of fruit and tobacco. The entry is deceptively soft here, and this slowly turns chewy with prune and chocolate flavors before becoming a full-on assault of wood. Short, powerful and hot, the palate is tough and virtually impenetrable, with gentle suggestions of plummy fruit and tart lingonberries emerging on the finish. Today this wine is all about power and oak. I don't know if the oak will ever integrate but i do have my doubts. Today it is frankly tough to drink. 80 points for sheer mass, 65 points for pleasure.
The nose is a bit woodsy here with nice mushroom and licorice tones but lots of cocoa and oak notes as well. Good acids in the mouth are paired with big, drying tannins. there is a bit of a woody sweetness here and the sweet pipe tobacco and rum raisin fruit tones come off as a bit clumsy. Pretty big scaled but not a lot of depth on the palate. Spicy warm finish with a bit more of a red fruit character improves with airing. 86pts
Four and a half glasses
Forest floor on the nose but lots of blackberry, cocoa and purple flowers. Fresh yet full on the palate. I think this vintage is already unbelievably great!
Musty fungal/barnyard aromas. Palate is fresh and fruity, delicious acidity and fruit, cherries and spice, a very refreshing wine. Nice long finish.
Upon opening a rich, warm and inviting nose filled with candied plum, menthol, potpourri and a little port. Dark purple in color. Cherries vanilla and rose petal on the palette. Long but cloying finish. An enjoyable Barolo but certainly from the modernists school of thinking. The oak used on this wine was too apparent. At times the nose turned to a jumble of cotton candy and confectionary deserts. Not my style of Barolo but enjoyable all the same.

The 2008 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata possesses striking inner perfume, beautifully detailed fruit and gorgeous textural elegance. Sweet red berries, flowers and mint are some of the nuances that emerge from this finely sculpted Barolo. Once again, the Rocche is all class and elegance. Rose petals and freshly cut flowers of all sorts reappear on the finish, adding lift and brightness. This is a dazzling showing. Scavino’s Barolo from Rocche dell’Annunziata is one of Piemonte’s reference point wines. Anticipated maturity: 2018–2033.
Very bright, full red. Knockout nose combines fresh black cherry, red berries, fruits, minerals, licorice and flowers; reminded me of a darker style of Chambolle-Musigny. Silky, lush and seamless on the palate, with the black cherry and mineral flavors already showing considerable appeal. The tannins arrive very late, allowing this full, broad wine to linger impressively and really perfume the taste buds. There are about 250 cases of this beauty.
Marked by beautiful fruit and alluring aromas of black cherry, black currant, violet, spice, tar and tobacco, this holds plenty in reserve. The tannins are dense and assertive, though the lasting impression is one of sweet fruit and elegance. Fine length. Best from 2017 through 2033. 248 cases made.
From a parcel purchased in 1990 with old vines, the 2008 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata shows a budding sense of maturity and profound beauty. The color is bright and vibrant with brilliant ruby and garnet highlights. The mouthfeel is silky, tight and extremely fine. The wine is dinking beautifully right now and shows the untapped potential of the often-overlooked 2008 vintage. Wines from La Morra usually offer sweeter tannins, and you can feel that here. Drink: 2016–2028.
Just mid ruby with orange tinge. Lifted cherry and oak but much more vibrant on the palate but with the fruit still locked in. Waves of fine grainy tannin. Lovely elegant palate weight and a light creaminess on the finish. Fine and seductive and still very young. 17/20 (WS) Jancis Robinson.
The 2004 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata has developed beautifully since I last tasted it a few years ago. That said, I am amazed how bright and primary the fruit still is. Sweet, perfumed aromatics lead to a core of silky fruit as this elegant... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Saturated deep red. Superripe, liqueur-like nose hints at dried flowers and mocha. Huge, velvety and quite powerful, but still youthfully unevolved. Hints of brown spices and dried flowers. Best today on the explosively long finish, which features strong but well-buffered tannins.
