Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Has a suggestion of thyme on the nose that could lead to tapenade with time. This is a rather gentle nose, showing a hint of white mushroom and a bit of raw milk chocolate oak. Very supple tannins great the palate followed by red fruits with a hint of apple skins on the mid palate along with a small spice note. This is very easy drinking with a decent length finish showing red fruit with some spice and obvious wood tannins. A bit on the lean side. 88pts

For being a 2008 Barolo I was blown away by this wine coming from vineyards on the "Femminine" side of Langhe Valley at the very tip being Verduno. Outstanding aromas of berries, eucalyptus, and mint...a fantastic wine!

With fruit from the Verduno area, the 2010 Barolo Monvigliero shows extra spice and red fruit with a good sense of structure and persistency at the back. They acquired this one-hectare parcel in 2007 with 47-year-old vines. The site characteristics underline exotic nuances of spice or aged tea leafs. The tannin is present but silky and polished. This wine boasts its own unique personality. Drink: 2017–2030.

Good bright, dark red. Complex, showy aromas of raspberry, smoke and minerals. Juicy, pure and tightly coiled, offering very fresh flavors of red berries, red cherry, mint and menthol lifted by minerality. Finishes with suave, ripe, building tannins and a sexy complicating suggestion of leather. This has the energy for a long and graceful evolution in bottle but is already very expressive.

Rich and spicy, with cherry flavors tinged by licorice and menthol notes. Firm tannins add support to this solid, medium-weight style. Lingers on the finish but needs some time to hit its stride. Best from 2017 through 2028.

Served to me from under the table hors concours so to speak. Spicier and denser than Cannubi. Very closed and compact palate really reluctant but fragrant fruit on the finish. Big wave of tannin but not rough. Lay down. 17/20 (WS) Jancis Robinson.

Good full, dark red. Deep, pure, brooding aromas of black cherry, licorice and leather, plus a hint of oak spices. Offers lovely aromatic lift but comes across as tightly wound, even youthfully imploded, today, showing less texture than the more op... Stephen Tanzers IWC. Scavinos 2007 Barolo Monvigliero is by far the most concentrated, rich and structured Barolo I have ever tasted from this historic vineyard in Verduno. Firm yet polished tannins frame an explosive core of dark red fruit, rose petals, mint and spices... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. WA: 94pts-JS: 95pt- Superb raisiny, violet flower aromas with a clean herbal structure. The acidity and tannic level are quite noticeable as one would expect from a classic Barolo. Awesome cocoa powder and coffee notes carry on forever on the palate.
