Paolo Scavino Barolo Carobric 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Scavino's 2010 Barolo Carobric stands out for its focus and clarity. Sweet red berries, mint, crushed rocks and rose petals are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. The 2010 Carobric is bright, aromatically lifted and gorgeous in its precision. Today the 2010 is an infant, but it has gorgeous intensity and length. All the elements are in the right place. This is one of the best vintages of Carobric I can recall tasting. As a reminder, Carobric is a blend of fruit from Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc...96" AG 01/14

This has a pretty nose, noticeably toasty though with strawberry seeds, a little tar and licorice, and milk chocolate, aromas. Noticeably soft and supple on entry with nicely presented fruit on the mid palate showing good tension and a  fairly long finish.  There's a sneaky touch of sweetness here early on that minerality washes away on the backend. Soft, supple and fruity with creamy and sweet oak accents. 89pts

A totally unexpected showing of this bottle. I had expected a modern, oak influenced candy shop of a Barolo but what I got was a balanced and finessed example of an 11 year old Barolo just coming to age. Color was a brilliant dark red. The nose was a mix of intense spicy fruit, herbs and leather. But then, the palette... Fresh and vibrant red fruits with an amazing expansive flavor of ripe cherry on the mid palette. The finish was long, earthy and full of minerals, stone and tar. I would never have thought this would be a bottle from a "modernist" producer. My second favorite of the evening.

A mix of three crus (Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc), the 2010 Barolo Carobric veers towards fruity tones of red cherry and blackberry with pretty floral highlights at the back. The wine is straightforward and confident with a bright, vibrant voice. Drink: 2017–2028.

Offers classic aromas and flavors of rose, peony, raspberry, licorice and tar, with excellent depth and fine complexity. A rich earthiness develops and the tannins remain refined as this glides to a long aftertaste. The grip on the finish shows potential. Best from 2018 through 2036.

Very reticent nose exudes a red berry and smoke perfume. Suave, round and pliant if a bit youthfully reduced and not yet demonstrating its inherent nuance. But the balance and sweetness of this Barolo, not to mention its fine tannins and lovely length, suggest it will be a charmer with four or five years of cellaring.

A floral, elegant red, smooth in texture and well-muscled with tannins. Black cherry and plum notes hold the center, while the tannins edge their way back in on the finish. Best from 2016 through 2032.

The 2008 Barolo Carobric bursts from the glass with racy red fruit. This is a vibrant, beautifully focused Carobric endowed with gorgeous personality and sheer class. The tannins are firm yet beautifully balanced. The 2008 is a fabulous Carobric that impresses for its energy, verve and drive. I loved it. Anticipated maturity: 2018–2028.

The 2001 Barolo Carobric opens with a perfumed nose of freshly cut flowers, crushed raspberries and menthol. It offers flavors of ripe red fruits with excellent structure and length, closing with good freshness on the finish. Made from the Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc vineyards, it comes across as very classic owing to its blend of fruit sourced from parcels from different communes, and therefore understandably lacks the focus and definition of Scavinoandrsquo;s single-vineyard wines. Anticipated maturity: 2011andndash;2019.

The 2000 Barolo Carobric is admirably fresh, floral and tarry in its aromatic gamut, round and voluminous in its flavors. But the finish, here as well, is less supple than in truly superior vintages. Drink: 2005ndash;2016.
