My notes read Barrel, Barrel, tar, earth, spice coffee, and pancetta so it wasn’t all bad but really this was smothered with oak. In the mouth it was big, plush and dumb. Sure it’s extracted and packed with tannin so it gives the appearance of having something going on but there is no depth here, just weight and while the vanilla tinged cherry fruit might appeal to some it is just not what I would want to drink. You can buy better wine for under $10 Because of the extraction and tannins this will enjoy a very long life and very likely will be better in 10 or 15 years but it will never be what I look for in Barolo. 2015-2030 78pts.

My number two wine of the night, the Bric dël Fiasc initially showed cherry and potpourri dust but with time transformed into something more with cherry compote, allspice, hard red candy, roses and cooking sausage. The palate showed a good amount of structure and intense cherry fruit with herbal tea and mushrooms. The finish presented silky tannin that lent to a brilliant aftertaste of sour red fruit.

The 1998 Bric del Fiasc, from a vintage many have overlooked, is packed with heady notes of ripe dark fruit, licorice, mineral and sweet toasted oak flavors in a style that is utterly captivating. It is another full-bodied, powerful Bric del Fiasc. I... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 1998 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 750ml

A dramatic, provocative effort is the 1998 Barolo Bric del Fiasc. It possesses awesome levels of concentration, considerable power, immense body, and a fabulously pure, concentrated style. With impressive quantities of black fruits, licorice, minerals, asphalt, earth, and truffles, this Barolo is notable for its purity, high extract levels, and seamlessness. Anticipated maturity: 2004ndash;2016.

Good deep red. Aromatic nose combines floral, tobacco and smoky elements. Sweet red fruit and floral flavors framed and lifted by harmonious acidity. An ample Barolo with clarity and class, not to mention superb balance. Finishes with perfectly buffered tannins and excellent persistence.

Classic, well-crafted red. Vivid aromas of crushed berry, mineral and flowers. Full-bodied, with round tannins that are covered with ripe fruit. Long finish of fruit and fresh herbs. Best after 2007.

Winemaker's Notes:

The modern history of the Scavino family starts with this vineyard, within the Fiasco cru. Here the Nebbiolo grapes were always the best: consequently in 1978 young Enrico convinced his father Paolo to vinify these grapes separately. In this way the first, and still most loved cru, was established. The austere and fascinating king of the Scavino home.
