Paolo Scavino Barolo 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Smelling like a bowl of cherry fruit topped with hints of sandalwood, rose hips, and other woodsy spice. Sweet and round on entry, this shows off lots of red fruit and soft tannins in a rather loose and  fleshy style that finishes quickly with a pop of black cherry fruit. A bit pedestrian. 86pts

darker, denser, and redder – really intense nose of liquory and jammy fruit over spicy oak notes, think jam on toast – very soft and strawberry fruited, good medium bodied mouthfeel, simple, some menthol, good acidity, bit drying on the finish, very pleasant if monolithic, nice herbal character on the finish which is a bit drying, spicy and dark. A decent wine if not particularly Barolo-like

Waxy on the nose with lightly pruny fruit and sweet spicy, toasty notes. Really quite bright on entry with big, simple red raspberry fruits supported by soft tannins that support the fruit through the moderate finish ending with a nice hint of tar. With air this shows a bit better integration but it is a bit clumsy. 86pts

Well develop nose with blackcurrant and dark cherries tones. Firm on the palate with present tannins. The acidity is lifting up the wine towards the end. The finish is quite silky with a long length. QC (http://www.questionofwine.blogspot.com)

This wine gives me goose bumps. First time I had it was in small wine bar in Rome after a lovely day with a close friend & his family. Plums, dried fuits, juicy, complex. Pure velvet. It's what made me start loving wine.

Paolo Scavino is a historic winery in the Barolo region. It was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Farming has always been a family tradition and passion. Enrico Scavino together with the daughters Enrica and Elisa, fourth generation, run the family Estate today. Through over 60 years of experience he has focused on createing the best wine possible and sourcing from the finest crus. Through the years Scavino Barolo’s have received wide attention and accolades including perfect 100 point scores. This Barolo 2011 DOCG, 100% Nebbiolo, comes from the best plots of seven different vineyard plots. The diversity of soils, exposure and altitude characterizes the terroir of each of these small but very important crus. Unifying the diverse expressions, this wine offers harmony and complexity with the overall character of the Barolo zone. Separate vinfication including destemming and light crushing, then maceration and the alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel with temperature control and indigenous yeasts. Each lot is kept separate and aged in neutral French oak barrels for 10 months and further 12 months in large casks. The final blend is a careful selection in the cellar of the most performing barrels. James Suckling scored this 93 points saying "There's focus and beauty to this full-bodied Barolo with pure fruit, walnut and berry character. Round and velvety. Clean finish. Shows wonderful potential. Better in 2018. I like this as much as the excellent 2010."

The 2010 Barolo is sourced from five or six vineyards in Castiglione Falletto and Barolo. This is a gorgeous wine with a silky entry and loads of elegant fruit, cassis, licorice, tar and cola. There’s a real sense of energy and zest in the mouth that is not just due to the freshness of the acidity. It comes from the pristine quality of fruit in 2010. Drink: 2016–2028.

With many 90+ scores, Wine Enthusiast Magazine gave this 93 and said “Enticing aromas of violet, rose, red berry, vineyard dust and alpine herbs float from the glass. The savory, bright palate delivers crushed Morello cherry, red raspberry, graphite and clove alongside polished tannins and brisk acidity. Already surprisingly accessible, it will be even better in a few years. Drink after 2018.”

This is austere and compact, with an earthy underbrush element complementing the dried black cherry, anise, tar and tobacco flavors. The persistent finish shows severe tannins. Best from 2017 through 2029. 1,900 cases made.

Good bright medium red. Pure, high-pitched aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice, violet, menthol and pepper. Supple but a bit youthfully reduced, showing lovely vinosity to its medium-bodied dark fruit, licorice and floral flavors. Much juicier and less evolved than the 2009 version. Finishes with substantial suave tannins that reach the front teeth.

An outstanding entry-level Barolo and one of our favorites at this price point. Paolo Scavino Normale Barolo strikes a magnificent balance between lovely fruit character and intriguing notes of mineral and spice.
