Paloma Merlot Spring Mountain California North Coast Us Spring Mountain Napa 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

90 points Wine Spectator: Impeccably balanced, with rich, vibrant, intense currant, fresh earth, black cherry and blackberry fruit that's well-focused. The tannins and cedary nutmeg-laced oak add a firm edge on the finish. Best to cellar short-term or decant. Drink now through 2010. 1,930 cases made. (12/15/05)

We have always had an interest in wine, both in its making and its consumption, and in food and gardening. In 1980, we were living in Midland, Texas, and began thinking about a second home; we decided to start looking for a small property in the Napa Valley were we could build a home and plant a small vineyard. This dream was realized in 1983 when a friend of ours, Dan Duckhorn, called and told us about the property we now call Paloma Vineyard. Read less

An elegant, soft, velvety example of Paloma, with a deep ruby/purple-tinged color, attractive notes of caramel, mocha, sweet cherry and berry fruit, this 2003 Merlot is round and medium-bodied with no hard edges. Drink it over the next 5–6 years.

Bright red-ruby. Complex nose combines plum, cherry, raspberry, chocolate, flowers and loam. Supple and juicy in the mouth, with rather cool flavors of cherry, chocolate and herbs. Offers moderate flesh and depth. finishes with dusty, slightly dry tannins and hints of licorice and menthol.

The owners of this Napa winery gave retirement a new and very active meaning when they purchased 15 acres of vineyards near the top of Spring Mountain in 1983 and began producing some of the best Merlots made in California. Unfortunately, they produced only 1,900 cases of this voluptuous wine.
