What to Expect
Merlot has gotten a bad rap as of late but there is no denying the wine's appeal. Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure. Its velvety texture makes Merlot instantly appealing and an obvious alternative to similar, more tannic Bordeaux varieties.
Winemakers Notes
Our Merlot is a blend of Estate Merlot and Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. The percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon ranges from 12 to 18 percent depending on the vintage. The grapes for this wine are picked in very small amounts as each area of the vineyard reaches its peak of ripeness. The grapes are then de-stemmed and the individual berries cracked open by our 20-year-old Healdsburg stemmer/crusher (with the crusher rollers removed) and fermented in small open top fermenters or small stainless steel tanks. Reviews Add a Review
Rating: 86/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 120, May/June 2005 ($51) Full ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of dark berries and chocolatey oak, with some herbal notes lurking. High-toned and leanish in the mouth, with slightly stewed, medicinal plum and raspberry flavors. Reminded me of dry port. Finishes with some raspberry flavor but also a faint oaky dryness and a sour edge. Not at the same level as the 2001.

Fine Wines
Paloma's 2002 Merlot is a worthy successor to their brilliant 2001, but it is not as rich, complex, or deep as the latter vintage. The dense ruby/purple-tinged 2002 possesses lovely aromas of chocolate-infused coffee intermixed with berry and currant... Robert Parker.
