Palmina Tocai Friulano Santa Ynez Valley Honea Vineyard 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

89 points Jeb Dunnuck (Wine Advocate): ...very crisp and light, with juicy citrus, lime and mineral water-like qualities all emerging from the glass, the 2012 Tocai Friulano Honea Vineyard couldn't be easier to drink with its light-bodied, clean and pure palate feel. A perfect meal starter, it would also do just fine on a hot summer day on its own. Drink it over the coming year. Drink now-2014. (Aug 2013)

Palmina is more than a winery and enoteca. It is a philosophy and it is a passion. It is a strongly held belief that wine is an extension of the plate, a component of a meal and a means to bring people together. Formed by winemaker Steve Clifton in 1995, Palmina is named in honor of Steve’s great friend Paula, who taught him to love cooking, wine and the Italian lifestyle and who was a spark in Steve’s life. After Paula succumbed to breast cancer, Steve found that her given name on her Italian birth certificate was Palmina, and the winery was thus fittingly named. Read less

A little flinty on the nose with suggestions of honeycomb, crab apple, dried polleny flowers and a hint of almond over bright, mineral notes. Moderately rich and bright on entry with really fine supporting acids in a style that is just a bit lean, perhaps vintage related, though this delivers nice citrus pith and almost honey flavors on the palate with a candied orange nuance on the backend that leads to a really fine, long mineral, citrus pith, and vaguely herbal finish. 89pts

If you like a good Sauvignon Blanc. You will love this wine. It is my absolute favorite. Goes well when grilling in the Summer or any occasion. I purchased one bottle after reading an article on Snooth about this variety and went back the next day to order a case!

Tocai Friulano is a white Italian variety that is at ease both in a rustic caf or frasca, or at an elegant dinner in a white-table cloth restaurant. Its versatility allows it to be paired with a wide variety of foods spicy, hearty, savory and is the only wine that pairs with asparagus! A subtle bouquet of almond blossom and the first springtime perfume from a mimosa acacia tree mingle with pear and a hint of exotic sandalwood. Delicate, fresh and inviting, a first sip unveils notes of fuji apple, restrained spicy tangs of fennel and French tarragon and just ripe danjou pear.

A pastel yellow, spun gold color first beckons - like that first morning sunshine in a white room. A subtle bouquet of almond blossom and the first springtime perfume from a mimosa acacia tree mingle with pear and a hint of exotic sandalwood. Delicate, fresh and inviting, a first sip unveils notes of fuji apple, restrained spicy tangs of fennel and French tarragon and just ripe d'anjou pear. Beautifully balanced with élan - elegant, refined, and yet full of verve and personality, this wine finishes with lingering notes of bitter almond. Tocai Friulano is at ease both in a rustic café or frasca or as a wine at an elegant dinner in a white-table cloth restaurant. Its versatility allows it to be paired with a wide variety of foods - spicy, hearty, savory - and is the only wine that pairs with asparagus! Serve chilled, and in its youth.

The 2007 Tocai Friulano Honea Vineyard offers notes of apple skin, lemon zest, spring flowers, and hints of herbs and spice. The wine is dry and deliciously fresh and vibrant.

Wine Tasting NotesFrom the most popularly planted grape from the Friuli region of northeastern Italy, this delicate white exhibits a nose that blends sweet amaretto and honeyed aromas with lychee nut and citrus blossoms. On the palate distinct flavors of white peach blend with meyer lemon and blood orange. The balance provides a very clean and pleasing, lemon curd finish.
