Palmina Nebbiolo Santa Ynez Valley Sisquoc Vineyard 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Crimson with ruby edges, leading to berry aromas that mingle with garden notes of rose and warm, stony soil. On the palate, elegant, long, sweet rising tannins deliver texture, beautiful bright acidity and layers of fruit that range from wild raspberry to dark plum. Enhanced by a deep molasses thread, interlaced with cinnamon, allspice and clove.

Palmina is more than a winery and enoteca. It is a philosophy and it is a passion. It is a strongly held belief that wine is an extension of the plate, a component of a meal and a means to bring people together. Formed by winemaker Steve Clifton in 1995, Palmina is named in honor of Steve’s great friend Paula, who taught him to love cooking, wine and the Italian lifestyle and who was a spark in Steve’s life. After Paula succumbed to breast cancer, Steve found that her given name on her Italian birth certificate was Palmina, and the winery was thus fittingly named. Read less

Vintage: 2005 09/12/2010

The 2005 Nebbiolo, Stolpman Vineyard is a ruby-colored wine with beautiful clarity and brick-red edges. A swirl in a decanter and the glass encourage this sometimes taciturn wine to unleash those classic aromas of cranberry, red plum and rose petals - and then earthy notes of tar and a hint of smoke. On the palate, Nebbiolo's reputation for that yin-yang of "sweet and savory" is confirmed, with layered bursts of dried black cherry and raspberry mingling with herbs d'provence and earthy, brambly accents of porcini mushroom. The balance of fruit, tannins and acid is there with depth of fruit and texture melding with the elegance and light grip of the tannins, a teasing bite from the acid and a round, lingering finish. The 2005 Nebbiolo is definitely a food wine, and the incredible beauty of the wine can only be appreciated when combined with a meal. A sip of wine, a bite of a nicely-grained cut of meat - sublime! We recommend pairing this wine with braised meats or hearty stews. Known for its ageability, this Nebbiolo will continue to evolve and gain complexity with cellaring.

Winemaker Steve Clinton it’s very vocal about his excitement for this Nebbiolo. A blend of 2 vineyards and aged for 2 years in foudre, this wine is riper with aromas of smoke, roses and violets with dark fruits on the palate and a tangy grip on the finish. Drink with food.
