Palmina Dolcetto Santa Barbara County 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

The nose is youthful and bright, full of red and Bing cherries. On the palate, notes of hard candy, with a lively Jolly Rancher-like cherry flavor. Mid-palate notes of cardamom, with a pleasurable, slightly herbal finish, with a trace of basil. Dolcetto characteristics shine through: a graceful balance of acidity and light tannins, alongside a youthful exuberance and freshness that make the varietal so versatile at the table. Food Pairings: antipasti, pastas with meat sauces, grilled fish, roasted poultry, and of course--pizza!

Palmina is more than a winery and enoteca. It is a philosophy and it is a passion. It is a strongly held belief that wine is an extension of the plate, a component of a meal and a means to bring people together. Formed by winemaker Steve Clifton in 1995, Palmina is named in honor of Steve’s great friend Paula, who taught him to love cooking, wine and the Italian lifestyle and who was a spark in Steve’s life. After Paula succumbed to breast cancer, Steve found that her given name on her Italian birth certificate was Palmina, and the winery was thus fittingly named. Read less

45% Dolcetto, 45% Nebbiolo, 10% Barbera Rather fruity watermelon, cherry and dusty rose/bay leaf nose. A touch fizzy on entry and bright with intense acids, broad on the palate if a little low, with easy mineral raspberry and watermelon flavors that lead to a modest slightly mineral finish. A nice firm little rose. 86pts

Spicy and a bit stemmy with hints of licorice, wood spice and dark berry fruit that shows a little mineral brightness and blue fruit highlights. Attractively light bodied and zesty with clear, fresh balsamic tinged wild berry fruit on the palate that carries just a touch of extra tannin at this stage. Nicely perfumed in the mouth, with a lovely flavor profile but there is just a whisper of extra tannin today that makes me want some fat with this. Fun wine. 87pts

Vibrant wine from Santa Barbara is high-toned and wonderfully acidic with spice notes and boysenberry.

Deep dark purple color. The nose started out like a smear of Welch's grape jelly on toast but with time turned to grape bubble gum and toasty vanilla. Sweet candied fruit on the palette, raisins, currents and even a little chocolate covered cherry. This Dolcetto from Santa Barbara is nothing like its Italian brethren but one heck of a fun bottle to drink, even if it is a little one dimensional.

Dolcetto is an easy-going, table friendly, "pull-the-cork-and-have-a-glass" wine. In wine speak, it is often labeled as "approachable", but that really is too formal a descriptor for this genial varietal. Dolcetto, whose name translates as "little sweet one" is a wine full of youthful exuberance, but also a wine with structure and balance. Fresh summer fruits come to mind with the 2006 Dolcetto - a reflection perhaps of those meals with which it pairs so well. A dark ruby color with amethyst highlights foretells of the character in this wine, which with a swirl produces aromas of raspberry and cherry, a bit of toast and a hint of violets. At a first taste, the smooth texture caresses the palate with summertime notes of black cherry, fresh red plums, and those wild berries we all picked in our youth - blackberry, huckleberry and dark raspberries. Yet with all the intense fruit flavors, there's a nice underlying bright acid in the wine and soft, almond-like tannins on the finish. Enjoy Dolcetto as in Italy - da pronto bevere - a wine to drink now. We love it with a slight chill!
