Palmina Dolcetto Santa Barbara County 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

"Even Dolcetto’s hue speaks to its easy going nature, with a deep and bright ruby color inviting a sip. The nose is spicy and very berry, with a hint of spice mingling with blackberry aromas that waft from the glass. On the palate, there is a perception of hard-candy sweetness that mingles with a beautifully balanced acidity and soft tannin structure. Concentrated black raspberry and plum preserve flavors are interlaced with a subtle earthy minerality that leaves a lasting impression of raspberry, a hint of “red vine” licorice and toasted almonds at last sip. Dolcetto is the perfect picnic wine, a delightful interlude between white and heavier red wines at a multi-course dinner and the ultimate complement to pizza, which is our featured recipe! Enjoy in its youth and serve either at cellar temperature or even slightly chilled." -Winery

It is a strongly held belief that wine is an extension of the plate, a component of a meal and a means to bring people together. Formed by winemaker Steve Clifton in 1995, Palmina is named in honor of Steve’s great friend Paula, who taught him to love cooking, wine and the Italian lifestyle and who was a spark in Steve’s life. After Paula succumbed to breast cancer, Steve found that her given name on her Italian birth certificate was Palmina, and the winery was thus fittingly named. Read less

Spicy and a bit stemmy with hints of licorice, wood spice and dark berry fruit that shows a little mineral brightness and blue fruit highlights. Attractively light bodied and zesty with clear, fresh balsamic tinged wild berry fruit on the palate that carries just a touch of extra tannin at this stage. Nicely perfumed in the mouth, with a lovely flavor profile but there is just a whisper of extra tannin today that makes me want some fat with this. Fun wine. 87pts
