Palmina Barbera Santa Ynez Valley 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

- Aromas of sweet wild cherry and slightly candied raspberries greet the nose backed by gentle notes of cream, vanilla, spice and herb. This is gentle and subtle on the nose but there is an intriguing underlying complexity and depth hat draws one back to the glass. - Bright acids right up front roll up the palate with bright cranberry, spiced plum and wild cherry flavors that are a bit simple yet wonderfully pure and fresh. Again there is a touch of creamy oak on the midpalate but it remains unobtrusive and in a supporting role. Raealy zest on the back end and into the wild berry finish. Just a happy bottle. There are top notes of flowers and toasted herbs in the mouth that gives this another layer but it’s really about the bright, light fruit. 89pts

Palmina is more than a winery and enoteca. It is a philosophy and it is a passion. It is a strongly held belief that wine is an extension of the plate, a component of a meal and a means to bring people together. Formed by winemaker Steve Clifton in 1995, Palmina is named in honor of Steve’s great friend Paula, who taught him to love cooking, wine and the Italian lifestyle and who was a spark in Steve’s life. After Paula succumbed to breast cancer, Steve found that her given name on her Italian birth certificate was Palmina, and the winery was thus fittingly named. Read less

One big surprise was the Palmina Barbera being the 6 out of 8 favorite at a tasting I held recently. I was trying to be sneaky putting a California Barbera in there with a slew of reputable Italian bottles and my guests picked it out immediately. I will admit that it has a good freshness and length that made it very attractive. It performed an interesting balanceing act of showing many modern Barbera flavors while maintaining the structure of a more traditional styled wine. I was very surprised by this bottle.

Steve Clifton's handcrafted wines made from Italian varietlas are among the best CalItal wines made in America. The 2006 Barbera exhibits a deep rub-red color with violet hues foretelling of the dark fruit profile in the glass. A swirl releases a bouquet of ripe plum, blackberry and black currant along with subtle traces of nutmeg and toasted vanilla. On the palate, the wine is mouth-coating and silky and just plain friendly!
