What to Expect

Barbera is one of the classic Grapes of Italy's Piedmont region, though it is popular throughout much of Northwest Italy and has gained a following in California. Searing acidity has been a trait of Barbera though modern viticultural techniques and warmer regions have tamed the acidity, resulting in medium-bodied wines with bright, red fruit tones that feature hints of violets, earth and plum with just a whisper of tannin.

Winemakers Notes

Barbera is a hardy and easy-going grape that is much beloved in the Piemont region of Italy and indeed a part of everyday life there. It is a very old varietal, thought to perhaps be the "Grisa" grapes of medieval times and first documented as "Barbera" in the 1500's. There is an old saying that the grape impersonates the character of the Piemontese who cultivate it - robust and yet unassuming. Barbera's agreeable nature and adaptability to different soils and climates have made it a popular wine grape varietal in California as well as Italy.

A read more...

Much more impressed with this wine now than I was when I tasted it in 10/07 in the tasting room. Time has really been kind to this wine, and it is drinking beautifully now. Beautiful color, with aromas of sour cherry, minerals, and dusty brush. Full-bore, intense cherry, cranberry, and mineral flavors with a zesty, low-tannin finish. Great acidity, though, and a great wine for pairing with tomato-based dishes or grilled foods. Would definitely consider buying more and perhaps seeing what even more time would do to this wine.
