Palmaz Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Notes: The saying “adversity breeds greatness” is very apropos for this vintage. The extreme drought of 2013 allowed for the vines to receive very little rainfall. However our water treatment center ensures there is always sufficient water stored in the caves for such a drought. As a result, in 2013 we were able to manage a drought vintage with out damage to the fruit quality. The resulting wine exhibits exceptional concentrations both in structure and aromatics. At first glance, the nose exhibits an inviting whiff of raspberry liquor that is anchored by wet stones drying on a hot summer day. The fruit flavors are a parade of black and blue fruits that slowly transfer to sweet black tea with a gentle yet firm finish. This wine is a perfect excuse to dust off the decanter and stash a few bottles in the back of your cellar if you can resist drinking every bottle young.

The Palmazes bought a forgotten stone winery, a fine old house badly in need of renovation, and acres of land that had once produced fine Napa wines. The little valley had been the site of Cedar Knoll Vineyard and Winery, founded in 1881 by Henry Hagen, one of Napa Valley's pioneer winemakers. Henry Hagen produced wines that garnered many awards, including a silver medal at the Paris Exposition of 1889. During that era, Cedar Knoll was one of Napa's premier wineries. The vineyards survived the Wine Country’s phylloxera infestation in the 1890s, but Prohibition was fatal. The winery fell into disrepair and the vineyards lay fallow for nearly eighty years. Today, the vineyards are burgeoning, the restored Hagen house is a family home again, and the winery has been reinvented. Read less

A previous selection for Gold Medal Wine Club-Diamond Series. Palmaz Vineyards is a family affair in the finest tradition. Julio Palmaz still spends a part of his time in the winery operation. All other family members spend 100% of their efforts on behalf of Palmaz Vineyards. The core of Palmaz Vineyards and a wine that inspired a couple to revive a legendary aspect of Napa Valley’s winemaking heritage, Cabernet Sauvignon is the soul, the charm, and the quintessence of the Palmaz family estate. Over the past eleven years, the family has developed a new standard of hands-on, natural, ultra-premium winemaking that’s constantly recognized and praised by many of the top sommeliers in the world. The 2004 Palmaz Cabernet Sauvignon is a one-of-a-kind, awe-inspiring Napa Valley Diamond that comes extremely highly recommended.

Vintage: 2012 08/28/2016

Tasting Notes: This wine is extroverted and braggadocios. The warm weather of 2012, consistent and almost euphorically pleasant, produced fruit with exceptional ripeness and plush tannins. The explosive blackberry and vanilla aromas draw the attention of even the most distracted taster. The texture is satisfyingly rich, reminiscent of browned butter, with a finish that lingers on the palate. Quite ripe and satisfying alone, this wine can be enjoyed with hearty dishes such as braised short ribs, or enjoyed equally with fine dark chocolates and a cigar. Vintage: 2011 07/03/2016

Notes: The 2011 vintage offers an elusive and refined character. While some Cabernets dazzle the palate with exciting single characteristics, this vintage draws in the taster with a compilation of well-tuned elements. The aromas are a symphony of lilac and pomegranates, anchored with notes of cedar and caramel. This focused and refreshing vintage encourages the connoisseur to explore how the tannins gently unwind across the palate. Pair this vintage carefully with delicate dishes such as roasted squab and morels, or simply counterpoint it with an exquisitely aged cheese. The moderately cool weather of 2008 contributed to the excellent texture and depth of this vintage. The resulting wine exhibits dense layers of silky tannins and dark fruit that will evolve beautifully.
