Palm Cellars Syrah(2004)

The 2004 was sourced from a new vineyard in Westside, Paso Robles. The vineyard sits high atop a ridgeline at 1800 ft. I have 3 clones planted at the crest. Each clone is monitored separately and picked at the peak of ripeness. Each clone came in on it's own time frame and was fermeneted in it's own fermenters and allowed to barrel age on its own. This was done to follow development of each clone and to see how each contributes to the final blend.


Winemaker notes

The grapes received a 3 day cold soak.
Inoculated with a variety of French yeast strains.
Hand read more...punchdowns and pumpovers.
35 day extended maceration.
Transfered to 80% new French and Hungarian oak.
20 months in barrel.
Bottled unfined & unfiltered, with low SO2.

This wine shows best with decanting and or 30- 60 mins of air. It starts out fairly tight, but with fine ripe tannins. After airing it exhibits fresh blackberry/blackfruit aromas mixed in with an array of spicies and subtle vanilla. It has a certain refinement usually not associated with Westside Paso Syrahs. While starting to display a dark/bakers chocolate like component, the mid-palate then kicks in. This focuses the wine into a rather graceful finish for such a young Syrah, before it comes back in a 2nd wave for a deceptively long finish. Elegance With Power.    (hide)
