James Leigh Cellars Palette(2003)

bouquet of roses, brown sugar and spice greet the nose while layers of dark jammy fruits and well-balanced tannins follow in the mouth. This elegant wine finishes with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. Shows well now or best to hold 5-8 yrs

This is a fantastic table wine at a great value. The nose is a complex mix bag of blackberries, sharp cheddar, cinnamon and Hershey's milk chocolate. There are flavors of cherries and berries seasoned with nutmeg action. The finish is a candied pop, like a fruity Jolly Rancher candy. There's something for everybody in this Palette.

I think this would be a great camping wine. . . and I mean this in the nicest way possible. The nose is great - it smells just like smore's with cinnamon graham crackers. There is a hint of sweet red bark on the nose as well which makes me want to snuggle up in front of the fire before I dive in. On your palate it's not to dry or gripping, but sweet like dried cranberries up front rolling into a finish that is just a bit spicy. I love it when things come full circle Great wine, great price.

Upon reading the sommelier's description of this wine I was eager to pick up on all the nuances described, including all the earthy, leathery notes so integral to my enjoyment of a red. Unfortunately, this vintage shows itself to be unexceptional, relying on what tastes like traditional oak standbys. Enjoyable, but priced a little too high for what should have been a more sublime flavor delivery vehicle.
