Palacios Remondo Tempranillo Blend Rioja la Montesa Crianza 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

"Alvaro Palacios is doing great things in the Rioja Baja. This blend of 45%Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha, and 15% Graciano and Mazuelo is aged in French oakfor 14 months. The warm 2005 vintage has been translated into a rich andgenerous palate, with notes of hedgerow, blackberries, vanillin and spice allevidenced. Excellent length and fine tannins; those who love the classic Riojaprofile, with its intimations of decadence and comfort, will not bedisappointed here." (Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer)

Palacios focused his efforts on the Crianza, La Montesa, a Garnacha-based blend from south-facing vineyards grown on the lower slopes of the Yerga mountain range, in pebble and clay soils. In the best vintages, Palacios also makes a top wine, Propiedad, a departure from his father’s use of traditional designations Reserva and Gran Reserva. The estate’s only white wine, Plácet, is made in small quantities from 100% barrel-fermented Viura, planted on the estate in 1989. The final wine, La Vendimia, with its eye-catching, contemporary label, is a fresh, fruit-driven value wine made from Tempranillo and  Garnacha. Palacios is committed to honoring his father’s memory by taking the estate’s quality to new heights, as evidenced by the suberb recent vintages.  Under his inspired leadership, Palacios Remondo is now a rising star of Rioja. http://www.foliowine.com/winery_pages/25_palacios_remondo/palacios_remondo.html Read less

A bright, zingy garnacha and tempranillo blend, this is a wine needing to be consumed in the first hour after uncorking. The nose opens with aromas of strawberry, coffee, nutmeg and sweet spices, followed by hints of floral perfumes and spices. The palate introduces a medley of strawberry, plum and wild red berries, mixed with flavors of coffee and tobacco, leading to a peppery finish with a pleasant zing. During the medium finish, bright notes of the wine’s red fruit theme emerge through a cloud of unobtrusive licorice, earth, cut grass, smoke and tobacco. A simple, light wine, the Montessa 2005 provides a zesty pre-meal drinking treat that leaves the palate fresh, clean and prepared for foods and wines to follow. Becomes thin and less zingy at 1 ½ hours as acidity fades.

Very complex aroma, with pepper and red berries predominating. Nice medium body/texture. Light to moderate tannins for a red, finish is soft but solid. Good pair with spicy steak salad tonight.
