Paitin Sor Paitin Barbaresco 2000

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Impressive wine. Rich aromas of ripe fruit and freshly ground spices. Full-bodied, with big, velvety tannins and a long, long finish. A blockbuster, yet very polished. Best after 2003.

The 2000 Barbaresco Soriandrsquo; Paitin Vecchie Vigne, on the other hand, is superb. Still an infant, the 2000 Vecchie Vigne explodes from the glass with a compelling array of plums, smoke, grilled herbs, leather and tobacco. Darker balsamic, mentholated notes develop in the glass, calling to mind some of the great Barolos of Serralunga. This powerful yet subtle, marvelously complex Barbaresco is at the beginning of what looks to be a long drinking window. As good as this is now, I have little doubt it will be even better in a few yearsandrsquo; time. This is a terrific showing from Paitin. Anticipated maturity: 2012andndash;2020.

The 2000 Barbaresco Soriandrsquo; Paitin is a big, muscular wine loaded with dark fruit but little in the way of aromatic nuance. Itandrsquo;s almost as if the wine has been frozen in time at some point, beyond which it never developed further. It is still an excellent Barbaresco, but frankly I expected more. Anticipated maturity: 2011andndash;2015.

The 2000 Barbaresco Sori Paitin, with smoky kirsch fruit, mineral notes, and tar on the nose, is warm and intense on the palate with black cherry, tar, and anisette flavors and a full finish. Anticipated maturity: 2000andndash;2016.

Paitinandrsquo;s Barberesco possesses the muscle and depth of the pricier Barolo. Dark ruby color in the glass with intriguing aromas signaling what will follow on the palate. Fantastic depth and complexity in this still young Nebbiolo. Black cherry, mushrooms and the classic (more so with Barolo) floral or rose element. Chewy and full-bodied with plenty of fruit and tannins. Best decant for an hour or two or age another 5 to 15 years. Excellent quality.

The 2000 Barbaresco Sori Paitin Vecchie Vigne is dark ruby in color, spicy and oaky on the nose, but with excellent tobacco, leather, and charcoal aromas. Its sweet, potent, and deep flavors, packed and with much vanilla and licorice, finish with an important weight, intensity, and texture. Anticipated maturity: 2005ndash;2018.
