This is indeed one of the best Merlots I have had in this price range. However, Pahlmeyer Merlot 2004 is very fruit-forward, so if you are an old-world wine drinker, you might not find it very special. On the nose, the first thing that hits me is very ripe black fruits, plum, a hint of mild spices, a little hint of vanilla. Smooth tannins, medium-bodied. On the midpalate, you get licorice, ripe black fruits. This wine impresses me quite a bit, given the fact you pay $70. I would buy it again and would recommend it to a friend. One last very important thing, do not be a shallow person and say I do not drink Merlot because of Sideways. This is very insane. I know you are not a shallow person! Happy drinking! P.S. bottled at 15.2%

Pahlmeyer has consistently produced one of the finest, most ageworthy Merlots in California. Their 2004 Merlot (a blend of 87.5% Merlot and 12.5% Cabernet Sauvignon) exhibits a soft, fleshy, up-front, charming bouquet of chocolate, berry fruit, and roasted herbs. Round, front-end loaded, and seductive, it should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.

Winemaker's Notes:

Why? This Merlot is by far Robert Parkers favorite from California (see below) so dont miss this one-time-only chance to add a few extremely rare bottles of Pahlmeyer, #1 Cult Collector Merlot in America to your cellar! Truly a must have for any serious Napa red wine collector. PORTHOS INSIDER SCOOP: This wine is a personal favorite and one of only 3 California Merlot that I collect in my personal cellar (along with Duckhorn Three Palms and Paloma). This new vintage has the same texture as the finest Silk from China! When we first sampled this massive wine we enjoyed it immensely the first day and then left a glass to sample the following day. The NEXT day this grand creation was even finer which bodes well for long term aging!!! TASTES: Robert Parker raved about the Pahlmeyer Merlot: Pahlmeyer has consistently produced one of the finest, most ageworthy Merlots in California.
