Pahlmeyer Merlot Napa Valley 1998
Alcohol: 14.1 % pH: 3.91 TA: 0.47g/100ml Composition: 46% Napa Valley, 21% Howell Mountain, 19% Carneros, 14% Atlas Peak; Merlot: 95%, Cabernet Franc: 5% Tasting Notes: Intense, deep, red-purple color. The nose combines black cherry, black raspberry, oak, spice and a hint of chocolate. Despite its youth, the 1998 Merlot is forward and very rich on the palate, with a restrained sweetness. The wine is concentrated with a long, lingering, full finish. Winemaking Notes: The grapes for our 1998 Merlot were carefully chosen from a small handful of prestigious vineyards. The lots for this wine were made from fully ripe grapes, brought to the winery in small bins and de-stemmed only. The whole berries were then fermented with wild yeasts. The Merlot was aged in new small French oak barrels for approximately 18 months and then bottled. This wine was neither fined nor filtered.

Pahlmeyerandrsquo;s 1998 Merlot is the finest Merlot tasted from what is a tricky and uninspiring vintage. It possesses lots of fruit, richness, depth, and intensity. Dark plum-colored, with sumptuous aromas of melted chocolate, prunes, plums, cassis, and berry fruit, this full-bodied, unctuously-textured, thick, juicy Merlot coast the palate in a hedonistic display of fruit, glycerin, alcohol, and smoky wood. A Merlot fruit-bomb, it can be drunk upon release, and over the following 7andndash;8 years.

A rich, concentrated yet elegant wine, with layers of mocha, currant and blackberry fruit. Tightens up on the finish, where the tannins flex their muscles. Intensity of the oak suggests short-term cellaring. Best from 2006 through 2012.
Impressive dark ruby color. Superripe aromas of chocolate syrup, mocha, tobacco and smoke, with a meaty nuance. Fat, thick and rich, with roasted currant and truffle flavors. Extremely lush and full in the mouth, but could use a bit more clarity and refinement. Finishes quite long, with smooth tannins.
