Alcohol: 14.1 %
pH: 3.91
TA: 0.47g/100ml
Composition: 46% Napa Valley, 21% Howell Mountain, 19% Carneros, 14% Atlas Peak; Merlot: 95%, Cabernet Franc: 5%
Tasting Notes: Intense, deep, red-purple color. The nose combines black cherry, black raspberry, oak, spice and a hint of chocolate. Despite its youth, the 1998 Merlot is forward and very rich on the palate, with a restrained sweetness. The wine is concentrated with a long, lingering, full finish.
Winemaking Notes: The grapes for our 1998 Merlot were carefully chosen from a small read more...handful of prestigious vineyards. The lots for this wine were made from fully ripe grapes, brought to the winery in small bins and de-stemmed only. The whole berries were then fermented with wild yeasts. The Merlot was aged in new small French oak barrels for approximately 18 months and then bottled. This wine was neither fined nor filtered. (hide)

- Good deep medium ruby. Plum, minerals, smoke and roasted tomato on the nose. Lush, sweet and plump, with a suave texture and a slight tarry nuance. Could use a bit more verve and complexity. Finishes with dusty tannins. On the light side for this bottling, but avoids dryness.
