Pacific Rim Sweet Riesling Columbia Valley 2016

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Notes: We are celebrating 25 years of Riesling this year and we thought it was time to update the packaging to reflect our core values. You've know about our love of Riesling for a while now, but did you know we're committed to sustainability? Some wineries use as much as 10 gallons of water for every gallon of wine they produce, we only use 1 gallon of water for every gallon of wine produced! Also, now 100% of the energy used at the winery is offset using wind power credits! Finally, we felt it was time to talk about our beautiful state of Washington with an ode to the shape on the front label. Rest assured that the wine inside the bottle is the same great Sweet Riesling you've always loved! We pick our Riesling grapes early (20-21 Brix). We use only native yeast and ferment at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks – there is no use of oak barrels or malolactic fermentation. We stop the fermentation at about 7% residual sugar, and we clean the wine rapidly to retain as much freshness and fruitiness as possible. We leave a fair amount of natural carbon dioxide in the wine to create a lively mouth feel. The resulting wine is moderately sweet and refreshingly low in alcohol - less than - with flavors of pineapple and peach. Our Sweet Riesling brings perfect balance to all fiery fare - especially Thai, Szechwan and Caribbean cuisine... or simply enjoy as an aperitif.

First released by Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon Vineyard in 1992, Pacific Rim Dry Riesling quickly gained a loyal following among Riesling lovers. Known for its fresh and bright characteristics, the wine was a welcome alternative to over-oaked, one-dimensional white wines. As the American palate evolved in recent years toward wines with greater complexity and crisper acidity, the popularity of Pacific Rim Dry Riesling grew. Demand and enthusiasm for Pacific Rim Dry Riesling continued to gain momentum — and the excitement around the wine inspired a radical idea... the creation a winery exclusively dedicated to Riesling. In August of 2006, a small band of Bonny Doon expats moved to the Northwest from California with a common desire to craft the best Riesling in America... thus, Pacific Rim became its own winery. At Pacific Rim, we are passionate about Riesling (in fact, nearly 90% of Pacific Rim's production is comprised of Riesling wines); we are passionate about crafting world-class Riesling; and we are passionate about extolling the wondrous virtues of Riesling. Explore our website and — if you haven't already had the pleasure — try our wines. If you're not presently a Riesling zealot, we're certain that you, too, will soon discover the marvels of our favorite variety...Riesling. Read less

The Pacific Rim Sweet Riesling Columbia valley (2008) is a rather sweet Riesling with an alcohol content of 8.5% (screw cap). I enjoyed it with some spicy food but found the candy sweetness a bit much. $10.99. 86 pts

Pacific Rim Sweet Riesling 2013 is fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks and sees no oak. This lively Washington white offers moderately sweet flavors of pineapple and peach with a refreshing finish. Wonderful as an aperitif or paired with spicy foods – especially Thai, Szechwan and Caribbean cuisine. - Winery

Pale gold with wonderfully aromatic notes of honey, pear and orange blossom. Pacific Rim Sweet Riesling is moderately sweet with bright acidity. Flavors of pineapple and white peach work well with the refreshingly low alcohol content. - Winery

The 2010 Sweet Riesling is made with a bit of trapped carbon dioxide to provide some lively sparkle. It has 6.9% residual sugar and 8.5% alcohol with enough acidity for balance. If the Vin de Glaciere is out of your price range, the Sweet Riesling is the perfect substitute. Soft and sweet, with a grapefruit edge to the pear and lemon curd flavors. Drink now. 69,000 cases made. -HS The Columbia Valley grapes that we choose for the Sweet Riesling are picked at about 20-21 Brix.
