Oyster Bay Pinot Noir 2016

Member Review by raindance:

Binny's 11/17. Remembering when Oyster Bay was so popular you could not find it. Now it is everywhere, and not as tasty as when it was scarce. The more the merrier? Not always with wine.

Oyster Bay Wines:
Internationally-recognised for producing "elegant, assertive wines with glorious fruit flavours", Oyster Bay is also a winemaker with great viticultural vision. It was Oyster Bay that had the foresight, over two decades ago, to recognise the enormous wine-growing potential that lay beneath the stony, alluvial soils of a marginal sheep farming district in New Zealand's Hawkes Bay. Today that region is producing New Zealand's finest merlots.

Black cherry on the nose and it donates the palate. Nice bit of acid to help balance but the lack of tannins leaves the impression of cherry cough syrup.

Very light, noticeably translucent/transparent red. Somewhat delicate yet complex nose with note of leather and cigar box, and some blackberry fruit. Surprisingly light and fruit forward on the palate with balanced soft acidity. A great PN for value, but I was hoping for greater complexity and length on the palate after sniffing this one.

The philosophy of Oyster Bay is to produce fine, distinctively regional wines that are elegant and assertive with glorious fruit flavours. With every vintage we are working with more established vines from small vineyard sites, each chosen for its aspect and uniform soils of moderate fertility, providing for extended ripening and enhanced fruit flavour profiles. With Pinot Noir the fruit is always the primary focus. Each vineyard block is harvested as a separate parcel and treated individually at each stage of the winemaking process. This enables us to influence and enhance the wine using traditional winemaking techniques, adding subtlety and complexity. We use a combination of barrel and tank fermentation and mature the wine in a mix of new and older French oak. Oyster Bay Marlborough Pinot Noir is elegant cool climate Pinot Noir at its best. Fragrant, soft and flavourful with aromas of ripe cherries and sweet fruit tannins that provide structure and length. - Winery

The nose on this New Zealand standout is floral and with hints of cherry. The palate is ripe and lushwith bright red fruit along with distinctive juicy black plum and violet nuances, carried by a seductivetexture and a lingering finish.

Oyster Bay Pinot Noir /06 Marlborough Medium-bodied, voluptuous wine with good straightforward red plum, strawberry, raspberry and cherry notes couched in some chocolate warmth from French oak. The wine has friendly tannins and a soft, personable, almost citrus-drink acidity that extends into an excellent finish. There are touches of clove, smoky earth and dried mushrooms.
