Oyster Bay Merlot 2008

Member Review by zufrieden:

Nice deep red color. Deep cedar chest spice with campfire smoke on the nose. More smoke and tobacco mixed with black cherry on entry. Medium finish. A bit lacking in the usual varietal flavor notes and nose, but sound with a bit of character. Similar in some respects to some Merlot from the Pacific Northwest.

Oyster Bay Wines:
Internationally-recognised for producing "elegant, assertive wines with glorious fruit flavours", Oyster Bay is also a winemaker with great viticultural vision. It was Oyster Bay that had the foresight, over two decades ago, to recognise the enormous wine-growing potential that lay beneath the stony, alluvial soils of a marginal sheep farming district in New Zealand's Hawkes Bay. Today that region is producing New Zealand's finest merlots.

Not too bad, considering NZ white wines are generally better than their reds. A bit of a spicy after taste which I quite enjoy.
