Owen Roe Yakima Valley Red 2012

Member Review by RPerro:

Excellent flavors of berry fruit, some smoke, and well-integrated tannins. Solid structure, with everything just working together nicely. Tied with Cottonwood Raya Jade Syrah for Wine of the Tasting! Outstanding - 93 points.

Owen Roe:
Since our first vintage in 1999, Owen Roe winery has been working to produce exceptional, hand crafted wines. We are especially committed to the low vigor hillside vineyards of Yakima Valley Washington. These vineyards yield fruit with low pH and high acidity, both harbingers of age-able wines.

Most definitely my Wine of the Night. Just incredible blend of fruit, acidity and tannins. So easy to drink, and with another year or so in the bottle, I can see this wine pulling down a 95 score from me. Outstanding!!

Decanted 1 hour. Beautiful dark purple in color, all the way to the edges. Nose of blueberry fruit, smoke and earth. On first sip, I get lots of blue and black berry fruit flavors, with very slight tannins that are nicely integrated with the fruit and acidity. The finish is long, and redolent of smoke, blackberries and a floral component. Always one of my favorite wines, I would imagine this would benefit from additional cellar time.

Drank at Lucy's Table in Portland, with K. Excellent blend. Tasted at winery over Thanksgiving, and had to order this bottle when I saw it on the Wine List. Enjoyed with mushroom risotto, while my date had a vegetarian 'meatloaf', that she was not too fond of. She said the wine saved her entree by bringing out flavor in an otherwise bland dish. Blueberries, smoke, and earth are the primary flavors here.

One of my favorites. Was first introduced to this wine on a tasting menu at Charlie Trotter's in Chicago. Very well balanced and smooth.

Amazing juice. Have been waiting one year to break into the case and it was well worth the wait. The wine has improved beyond my imagination. On the nose: blue & black berries with deep mineral components. Palate made my tonge dance! It is a pleasurable blend of berry, chocolate, coffee notes, and a finish that sings. David O'Reilly is at the top of his game and this wine showcases his amazing abilities. If you love new world "bordeaux style" wines this one is not to be missed. 95 points
