Owen Roe Syrah Columbia Valley Ex Umbris 2011
The deep ink hue is the first sign of the intensity found in this 2011 Syrah. Aromas of rich berry fruit such as boysenberry and blackberry, pomegranate and dark chocolate are intertwined with spicy flavors of licorice, cinnamon and toasty oak. The palate is coated with firm tannins and gripping acidity.
Since our first vintage in 1999, Owen Roe winery has been working to produce exceptional, hand crafted wines. We are especially committed to the low vigor hillside vineyards of Yakima Valley Washington. These vineyards yield fruit with low pH and high acidity, both harbingers of age-able wines.
The wine is a lovely, inky indigo in the glass with rich brooding darkness that makes me recall the wonderful angst ridden culture of the Northwest back in the glory days of Grunge, but I digress. The nose is beautifully fruity, with hints of warm berries, leather and smoke. The taste is just divine, with an explosion of very bright fruit, blackberries, cherries and currant that subsides almost as quickly as it came, transitioning to some spicy notes of black pepper and toasted oak. The finish is lovely, as the young tannins hold a firm grip on the long, smooth, dry finish that makes you want to sip this wine all afternoon. External Reviews for Owen Roe Syrah Columbia Valley Ex Umbris
Owen Roe Ex Umbris Syrah was supposed to be a one-off made from grapes influenced by some fairly serious fires in the area resulting in grapes with an undeniable smoke flavor. It was so popular they continued to produce it.
This wine was introduced as a one-time bottling in 2002 after a wild fire struck the vineyard's surrounding hillsides. The residual ash and smoke resonated in the Syrah grapes, creating a very memorable wine. Year after year, we are asked to develop a Syrah to keep the story of this wine alive! Now, 10 vintages later, we hope you will enjoy this bold Syrah comprised from several exceptional vineyards in the Columbia, Yakima and Walla Walla Valleys. - WineryVineyard SourcesYAKIMA VALLEY - 11.5% Red Willow Vineyard, 6% Outlook VineyardCOLUMBIA VALLEY - 15% Lewis Vineyard, 24% Six Prong Vineyard, 38% Erickson VineyardWALLA WALLA VALLEY - 5.5% St Isidore VineyardBarrel DetailsThe 2011 Ex Umbris Syrah spent 16 months in barrel.10% new French oak barrels usedAlcohol - 14.1%
